An investigation of accuracy and variability levels of judgments and decisions in a child protection context

| dc.description.abstract | Decision-making in the context of child protection is an extremely complex challenge, still understudied. To increase scientific knowledge in this domain, this study had as its primary goal to investigate the accuracy and variability of judgments and decisions made by a sample of 104 professionals working in Child Protection Committees in Portugal. For this, three decision-making scenarios were created varying in severity: low, moderate, and high. All professionals were asked, for each of them, to make two decisions - removal and recommended intervention - and a series of judgments - degree of severity, recurrence probability, and the impact of protective factors. Results showed that these professionals had very high levels of accuracy, and that levels of decision and judgment variability depended on the types of case. There was considerable disagreement on the proposed intervention, specifically in the cases where the child was to be removed from home. Additionally, judgments regarding the mitigating impact of protective factors varied largely, and disagreement was higher for more severe cases. It was also possible to observe that variability in the judgment phase did not necessarily translate into variability in the decision-making stages. | dc.description.abstract | Um conjunto de vários fatores tornam a tomada de decisão no âmbito de proteção de crianças um desafio extremamente complexo e ainda insuficientemente estudado. De modo a aprofundar os conhecimentos científicos neste contexto, este estudo tinha como principal objetivo analisar a precisão e a variabilidade de julgamentos e decisões de uma amostra de 104 profissionais das Comissões de Proteção de Crianças e Jovens em Portugal. Com esta finalidade, três cenários fictícios foram criados, cada um com diferente grau de gravidade associado: baixo, médio, e elevado. Foi pedido aos profissionais para tomarem duas decisões - retirada da criança e medida recomendada, e apresentarem uma série de julgamentos - grau de gravidade, probabilidade de reincidência, e o impacto dos fatores de proteção, relativamente a todos os cenários. Os resultados demonstraram graus de precisão bastante elevados, e diferentes níveis de variabilidade das decisões e julgamentos, que dependiam to tipo de caso em questão. Verificou-se bastante discordância no que toca às intervenções propostas após a recomendação da retirada da criança de casa, e também nos julgamentos acerca dos fatores de proteção sendo que, para este, a discordância aumentava nos casos mais graves. Também foi possível observar que os níveis de variabilidade nas fases de julgamento não se traduziram na fase de decisão. Os resultados referidos trazem implicações de formação para os profissionais que trabalham no contexto de proteção de crianças. | pt_PT |
