A presente dissertação versa sobre a vida e a obra de D. Fr. Inácio de São Caetano (1718-
1788), um carmelita descalço que desempenhou um importante papel no decurso histórico de
Portugal em Setecentos, bem como no seio da Ordem dos Carmelitas Descalços. Este trabalho
apresenta o percurso biográfico desta figura, desde o seu nascimento em Chaves, passando por
Braga e por Lisboa, até à Corte portuguesa, onde desempenhou a função de confessor da
Princesa do Brasil e futura rainha D. Maria. Inserido no quadro iluminista em Portugal, Inácio
de São Caetano assistiu e viu-se envolvido no seio de vários acontecimentos que acabaram por
marcar o século XVIII. Inácio de São Caetano, bispo de Penafiel e arcebispo de Tessalónica,
legou um corpus considerável, analisado nesta dissertação, reflexo do seu ideário e da sua vida
enquanto homem religioso e político, num dia-a-dia vivido entre o claustro e o palácio.
The present dissertation is about the life and work of Inácio de São Caetano (1718- 1788), a Discalced Carmelite who played an important role in the historical course of Portugal in the 18th century, as well as within the Discalced Carmelite Order. This work presents the biographical path of this figure, from his birth in Chaves, through Braga and Lisbon, to the Portuguese Court, where he was the confessor to the Princess of Brazil and future Queen Maria. As part of the Enlightenment in Portugal, Inácio de São Caetano witnessed and was involved in several events that ended up marking the 18th century. Inácio de São Caetano, bishop of Penafiel and archbishop of Thessalonica, bequeathed a considerable corpus, analysed in this dissertation, reflecting his ideology and his life as a religious and political man, in a daily life lived between the cloister and the palace.
