Unity is a fundamental and constitutive question of Christian theology, spanning centuries of history. Today, it becomes even more urgent in the context of ecclesial diversity. Yves Congar grew up in a France marked by tensions between the Church and the State, in an environment of increasing secularisation. For Congar, ecclesiology was the number one theological problem: the nature of the Church, its properties, structures, functions, the relationships between its members, with Scripture, Tradition, with other Churches and with the world were at the heart of the French Dominican’s theological concerns. In this sense, Congar emerged as one of the most influential voices in the development of the ecclesiology of the Second Vatican Council, especially with regard to the Church’s internal unity. Congar believed that the unity of the Church was, among many things, an internal reality, grounded in dialogue, communion and continual reform.

A unidade é uma questão fundamental e constitutiva da teologia cristã, que atravessa séculos de história. Hoje, torna-se ainda mais urgente no contexto da diversidade eclesial. Yves Congar cresceu numa França marcada pelas tensões entre a Igreja e o Estado, num ambiente de crescente laicização. Para Congar, a eclesiologia é o problema teológico número um: a natureza da Igreja, as suas propriedades, estruturas, funções, as relações entre os seus membros, com a Escritura, a Tradição, com outras Igrejas e com o mundo estão no centro das preocupações teológicas do célebre dominicano francês. Neste sentido, Congar destacou-se como uma das vozes mais influentes no desenvolvimento da eclesiologia do II Concílio do Vaticano, especialmente no que respeita à unidade interna da Igreja. Congar acreditava que a unidade da Igreja era, entre tantas coisas, interna, fundamentada no diálogo, na comunhão e na reforma contínua.
