Abstract(s)
Divorce is a transitional period that affects the family development cycle, changing its configuration and family dynamics, as well as it may increase stress and, consequently, reduce the family and individual well-being. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to assess the perception that divorced/separated parents have about parenting styles. The convenience sample was composed of 17 parents, 11 mothers and 6 fathers of school-age children (8-11 years) who had gone through a divorce/separation experience. Participants' data were collected in an online platform by completing the Portuguese adaptation of the EMBU-P and Questionnaires that collected information regarding the socio-demographic characteristics of children and parents, characteristics of the previous relationship and information on the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic situation on family dynamics. The results of the descriptive statistics of the EMBU-P indicated that participants showed high levels of emotional support, which shows that these parents tend to perceive parenthood with high levels of involvement and participation in their children's lives. No statistically significant associations were found between the scores on the dimensions of the EMBU-P and the parents' sociodemographic characteristics. However, a statistically significant correlation was found between the child's gender and the rejection dimension of the EMBU-P. This study contributed to highlighting some sociodemographic characteristics that may influence parenting styles, namely the children's age and the parents' gender. Thus, the results of this study corroborate the literature regarding some variables; however, the literature mentions the impact of other variables analysed in this study, in which the results were not in agreement, which suggests the importance of further research on this topic.
