| dc.description.abstract | Drawing from visual culture theory and gender studies, this article wishes to inquire into the Soviet framing of World War II and the Holocaust, and explore two intertwined questions within this particular visual canon: the negotiation between visibility and invisibility on the one hand, and the semiotic construction of gender on the other. This shall be tackled through the discussion of two moments of liberation. The first concentrates on the liberation of occupied territories on the Eastern front, with a special focus on Kerch and the Majdanek concentration camp; the second addresses the visual coverage of the liberation of Ravensbrück, the first purpose-built Nazi camp for women, reached by the Red Army just before the end of the war. | por |
