Abstract(s)
Apresentam-se no artigo os contextos e as circunstâncias próprias das bibliotecas dos estabelecimentos regulares portugueses no Antigo Regime, recorrendo, nomeadamente, aos testemunhos dos religiosos bibliotecários e aos modelos de classificação e ordenação utilizados em diversas bibliotecas de distintas ordens. Sobressaem da revisão bibliográfica e da análise destas fontes, algumas linhas de força como a importância do livro e da leitura em conventos e mosteiros, a utilização progressiva das melhores práticas na organização das bibliotecas e dos seus catálogos e o interesse em que a ordem dos livros correspondesse, da melhor forma, aos interesses dos leitores.
The article presents the models and practices followed by libraries of the Ancien Régime Portuguese convents namely through their classification schemes and using as primary sources the librarians’ testimonies as written in manuscript 18th century catalogues. From the bibliographical review that precedes the study and from the analysis of the catalogues it becomes evident the importance of books and reading in religious institutions, the use of modern librarianship practices and the clear intention of presenting the library and its catalogue as a service to the readers.
