Este ensaio traça uma breve genealogia dos estudos culturais de música popular enquanto campo académico, dispondo sob análise os desafios com que esta área interdisciplinar se tem deparado na afirmação da legitimidade do seu objecto de estudo e igualmente na sua complexidade, reconhecendo as recentes transformações ocorridas nas dimensões social, política, económica e tecnológica e as implicações que estas têm manifestado nos processos de produção, circulação e consumo de música. O impacto da pós-modernidade nesta área é debatido à luz da crescente fragmentação de géneros e públicos, das consequências da globalização e da crescente complexidade da relação entre o local e o global, e das transformações nos processos e instituições da criação musical através do desenvolvimento das tecnologias digitais. Pretende-se, assim, contextualizar os actuais debates na área dos estudos culturais de música popular, tomando esta como parte fundamental da cultura popular contemporânea.
This essay traces a brief outline of the recent development of popular music studies as an academic field, accompanying the broader studies of popular culture and the challenges it has faced in terms of affirming the validity of its object of study and dealing with its complexity, acknowledging the recent transformations at social, political, economic and technological level and the implications they have had in the processes of music production, circulation and consumption. The impact of postmodernity in the current debates around popular music is also referred, namely the growing fragmentation of genres and audiences, the consequences of globalization and the complexities involved in the interplay between the local and the global, and the transformations in music processes and institutions caused by the development of digital technologies. The aim is, thus, to contextualize the discussion of popular music as an integral and crucial element of contemporary popular culture.
