Abstract(s)
The title of this study – Postmodernity and liquid religiosity: an analysis based on the contributions of José María Mardones and Zygmunt Bauman – situates us in one of today's great themes in the field of religion and philosophy of religion. It is a question of seeing how the era in which we live, known as post-modernity, and religiosity coexist and articulate and/or mutually influence each other. In order to delve deeper into the subject, this study draws on the analyses and contributions of various authors, especially José María Mardones and Zygmunt Bauman. The first chapter analyses the so-called postmodernity, highlighting some of its intellectual protagonists and some of its major trends and characteristics, since this is the general framework in which the current religious phenomenon is inserted, in its personal and community dimensions. The second chapter tries to identify significant elements for a diagnosis of religious practice in Portugal, in order to understand a little better the degree of religious belonging as well as the basic attitudes towards religious institutions and established beliefs. The third is the interpretative articulation of the first two, with the help of José María Mardones and Zygmunt Bauman and the respective theses of de-institutionalization of religion and liquid modernity. With this work, the interpretative efficacy of both the de-institutionalization thesis and the application of Bauman’s idea of liquidity to the current religious experience becomes quite clear.
