The present study aimed to understand whether significant differences existed among police forces in terms of perceived physical safety at work and occupational stress, and whether these differences were influenced by sex during the first covid-19 lockdown, which occurred between March and May 2020, in Portugal. A total of 174 police officers participated in this study, with data collected both online and in-person through the administration of a questionnaire. Regarding the results, it was found that the lower the perception of physical safety at work, the higher the reported levels of occupational stress. In other words, physical safety at work was identified as a predictor of occupational stress, while sex did not influence these two variables. The research conducted, as well as the results obtained in this study, may provide a valuable contribution to the identification and implementation of programs and strategies that could help prevent and mitigate perceived stress among these professionals in future emergency situations.
