Social and political ethics is the transversal horizon of the whole Work by Mons. José Policarpo. This essay on Social Moral Theology aims to show, based on the author’s thought, that the theological category of “signs of times” as well as the ethical and theological assumption of charity are elements that enable the dialogue with culture and the ethical convergence between the values of the world and the values of the Gospel, and from which social and political ethics is justified. The latter has practical and political implications, which constitute the verification criteria for the authenticity of faith. The socio-political commitment involves, thus, the practice of charity, the taking-part of the processes of social transformation, which may further what the author calls “city humanization”, by the building of justice and peace, even if the Christian eschatology is tuned to a horizon of meaning and excess which renders any historical construction provisional.
