Introdução: Os cuidados paliativos propõem-se a intervir e melhorar a qualidade de vida dos indivíduos com doenças graves, crónicas e incuráveis, sendo que os processos de perdas a elas associadas afetam o doente e também a sua família. Contudo a sociedade mostra-se exigente face ao cuidado do idoso, pela família, mas não reconhece legalmente os cuidadores e é ineficaz na resposta às necessidades de ambos, promovendo a realidade da institucionalização. Assim, é preponderante conhecer as famílias, já que as suas relações, dinâmicas, afetos, decisões e sentimentos moldam as necessidades do idoso e afetam a sua adaptação à institucionalização. Este estudo centra-se no fenómeno da institucionalização do idoso, olhado na perspetiva das famílias que acompanham este percurso, e pretendeu: compreender a perspetiva dos cuidadores sobre a institucionalização o idoso. Metodologia: É um estudo qualitativo, de natureza descritiva, em que foi utilizada a entrevista semiestruturada como instrumento de recolha de dados. Os dados foram analisados por recurso à análise de conteúdo, tendo como referência a abordagem de Bardin. Os participantes foram referenciados, pelos idosos, como sendo o cuidador significativo e o número foi determinado por saturação ou recorrência de dados. Foram respeitados todos os princípios éticos inerentes à investigação com pessoas. Todos os entrevistados consentiram livre e esclarecidamente em participar no estudo, conscientes de que o podiam abandonar a qualquer momento sem quaisquer repercussões. Resultados: Da análise indutiva dos dados, emergiram sete subcategorias e três categorias: Determinantes da decisão, Determinantes da instituição, Repercussão na família e um tema central que foi denominado Institucionalização do idoso. Conclusões: A institucionalização do idoso decorre de determinantes relacionados com: decisão do próprio idoso/família, escolha da instituição e integração da família na instituição, tendo repercussões na família ao nível da decisão, reencontro e vida social.
Introduction: Palliative care has its goal on the improvement of life’s quality in patients with chronic and incurable diseases making the associated loss process affect the elder and his family too. Yet, society it’s demanding with the elder’s care, family’s responsibility, but will not recognize legally the caregivers and it’s ineffective in satisfying the needs of the elder, promoting the reality of institutionalization. So, it’s important to know the families, their relations, dynamics, affections, decisions and feelings, because they shape the elder’s needs and influence the adaptation to institutionalization. The study focus is in the elder’s institutionalization phenomenon in the family’s perspective and aims to comprehend the families’ opinion about this process. Methodology: This is a qualitative research, uses interviews semi-structured for data collection. Data was analyzed using content analysis based on Bardin’s approach. The participants were chosen for being the significant caregivers in the elder’s opinion, and where determined by data’s saturation. All fundamental rights of human investigation were respected and all the participants gave their free and informed consent, knowing that at any time they could leave the study with no consequences. Results: From the inductive analyses of the data emerged seven subcategories and three categories: Decision determinants, Institution determinants, family’s repercussions and a central theme that was named Elder’s Institutionalization. Conclusions: The elder’s institutionalization are determined by the: family’s or elder’s decision, choosing the institution and integration of the family in the institution. This process has repercussions in the family during the decision, the reencounter and social life.
