Abstract(s)
This study aimed to evaluate oral hygiene practices among users of removable dental prostheses treated at a university clinic. Through a descriptive and observational methodology, data were collected via structured questionnaires addressing frequency, methods of hygiene, type and condition of prostheses, professional guidance received, and related complications such as stomatitis or fractures. The results revealed a discrepancy between patients perceived knowledge and their actual hygiene behaviors. Although most participants believed they had sufficient information, many used inadequate products and had suboptimal hygiene routines. Additionally, no statistically significant association was found between regular dental visits and improved hygiene or prosthetic condition. Similarly, the presence of plaque or food residues was not consistently associated with clinical signs of prosthetic stomatitis. Challenges encountered included recruiting a representative sample and ensuring accurate responses due to cognitive or communication difficulties in elderly participants. Despite these limitations, the study highlights the need for educational reinforcement strategies, including printed visual materials such as flyers to support proper home care practices and enhance patient autonomy.
