- Do we really need sport psychologists?: facilitators and barriers to sport psychology developmentPublication . Gomes, A. Rui; Morais, CatarinaEven though sport psychology is an established field of Psychology, with over a century of research and well-defined practice, there are still questions about the added value of these professionals. In this paper, we briefly reflect on some of the advantages of hiring sport psychologists. namely the benefits of supporting evidence-based practice, certified professionals, and developing the athlete as a whole (not just focusing on their performance). On the other hand, there are some barriers related to costs, work conditions, and development opportunities that make organizations question the hiring of such professionals. In this manuscript, we propose a decision-tree on hiring sport psychologists based on one’s analysis of four domains: beliefs about science, ethical issues, career opportunities and work conditions.
- O financiamento público da imprensa em Portugal : a opinião dos atores mediáticosPublication . Amaro, Duarte Coelho da Silva; Fonseca, Isadora de AtaídePublic funding of the press has been the subject of intense debate, both in Portugal and internationally, in a context of profound transformations in the journalism industry. The crisis of traditional business models, exacerbated by the digital transition and audience fragmentation, has led to a decline in media revenues, jeopardizing the economic sustainability of the sector. In this scenario, public funding is often seen as an essential mechanism to ensure the viability of journalism and informational plurality. However, the way in which this support should be structured remains a controversial issue. This dissertation analyzes the opinions of different media actors on public funding of the press in Portugal, seeking to identify points of consensus and divergence. The research reveals a general consensus on the need for state support to the sector, recognizing its fundamental role in promoting independent and sustainable journalism. However, divergences emerge regarding the modalities of such funding, with debates on direct subsidies versus indirect support, transparency in fund distribution, and the creation of mechanisms to ensure editorial independence. Methodologically, this study adopts a qualitative and quantitative approach, combining content analysis of opinion articles, semi-structured interviews with media directors and political representatives, and a survey of unionized journalists. The results provide insights into the factors hindering the establishment of a consensual public funding model, as well as potential solutions to balance state support with editorial autonomy. The findings of this research highlight the urgency of a balanced approach that ensures the economic sustainability of journalism without compromising its critical and watchdog role. The study contributes to the academic and political debate on the future of the press in Portugal, offering a well-founded analysis of the dynamics at play and suggesting directions for future public policies in the sector.
- Storage, moving and re-storage of Municipal Oporto collectionsPublication . Aguiar, Maria; Ferreira, Inês; Teixeira, Mariana; Barata, Carolina; Cabral, AnaWithin a wider collections management programme conducted by the Divisão Municipal de Museus (DMM) from Oporto City Hall, a collaboration has been started with the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) for reorganisation of the municipal storage facilities and to set up the process of transfering collections to permanent housing in a refurbished building. The main goals of the project are to prepare the collections to be transfered, organise two temporary storages, establish procedures for moving the collections between temporary and permanent spaces, organise the final storage space and support the setup of guidelines for preventive conservation. In parallel, several training actions in the field of preventive conservation have been organised, to provide updated knowledge to the entire team of the DMM and to standardise the procedures to be implemented. Interconnections created during the project enabled us to capitalise personal skills and empower the DMM team with competences to lead autonomous work. The three-year project started in January of 2020, only 2 months before the pandemic outbreak in Portugal, and required permanent adjustments to adapt to this unexpected context. The work was done in close articulation with the conservation team of the Museum of the City and also with the register and inventory staff.
- Back pain and body posture evaluation instrument: validation of the questionnaire for Portuguese pre-adolescentsPublication . Matos, Maria João; Festas, Constança; Barreiras, Catarina; Almeida, Sofia; Noll, MatiasBackground: Knowledge of pre-adolescents’ postural habits and back pain profiles is essential for school health teams to develop systematized intervention strategies. Objective: To perform the psychometric validation of the Back Pain and Body Posture Evaluation Instrument (BackPEI) for Portuguese pre-adolescents.Methodology: A methodological study was conducted for the instrument’s linguistic adaptation, pre-test, and psychometric evaluation. This evaluation took place in two phases, using a test-retest design to assess the instrument’s reliability. Results: A total of 115 pre-adolescents participated in the study (M = 11.5 years). Questions 2.5 and 2.3 obtained the lowest (k = 0.072) and highest (k = 0.693) levels of agreement, respectively. For ques-tion 2.23 (pain intensity), no difference was found between the test (M = 3.54; SD = 1.98) and the retest (M = 3.54; SD = 1.33; p = 0.959), with the answers showing a strong correlation (ICC = 0.719).Conclusion: The European Portuguese version of the BackPEI retained the original 21 items, with the addition of two items suggested by the experts and proved to be a reliable tool for assessing pos-tural habits and back pain in Portuguese pre-adolescents.
- Sustainability as a strategy : a case study on Porsche AG and its efforts toward sustainabilityPublication . Herzberg, Tom-Gerrit; Cruz, Nuno Moreira daAgainst the backdrop of global challenges such as pandemic crises, increasing regulatory pressure, and shifting societal expectations, sustainability has gained increasing relevance. Consequently, it is no surprise that sustainability is playing a central role in the development of corporate strategies as never before. To investigate this development further, this master's thesis addresses the question of how companies can establish sustainability as a central field of action within their corporate strategy and create the necessary conditions to implement it holistically. Using a practice-oriented teaching case, the study investigates how Porsche AG transformed sustainability from a peripheral issue into a strategic focus area as part of its corporate strategy “Strategy 2030” in 2020. Based on qualitative expert interviews and publicly available data, the case examines internal and external drivers, structural requirements, and the development of both a corporate and sustainability strategy. In addition, the Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBSC) is applied as a methodological tool to approach the implementation of the corporate strategy and measure the progress. The thesis demonstrates that the successful integration of sustainability into corporate strategy requires not only clear objectives and strong leadership but also effective governance and implementation mechanisms. It offers a practice- oriented contribution to management research in the field of sustainable transformation and illustrates how strategic vision, structural change, and operational action must interact to establish sustainability as a guiding principle in corporate practice.
- Sustainable finance in Europe : the role of stock exchanges beyond regulatory compliancePublication . Cringle, Kai Patrick; Cruz, Nuno Moreira daThis dissertation explores how stock exchanges in Europe can actively facilitate sustainable finance beyond the boundaries of regulatory compliance, particularly focusing on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Omnibus-package, and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). The main objective is to assess whether stock exchanges can and should act as drivers of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) progress, not just neutral infrastructure providers. Through qualitative interviews with sustainability professionals, exchange officials, and academics, paired with institutional analysis of major European exchanges such as Deutsche Börse, Euronext, and the London Stock Exchange, the study identifies both opportunities and challenges. Key findings show that exchanges increasingly promote ESG through financial products, educational tools, and transparency mechanisms. However, overregulation is viewed as a critical obstacle, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), potentially hindering innovation. The research concludes that stock exchanges have a unique dual role: they must provide neutral platforms for capital allocation while also proactively shaping sustainable market behaviour. Their ability to offer ESG indices, sustainability-linked products, and investor education initiatives positions them as essential players in Europe9s green transition. Success in this role depends on balancing regulatory frameworks with market-driven innovation and public engagement.
- Circular economy in the e-scooter sharing industry : a qualitative analysis of tier’s strategic use of circular economy principlesPublication . Rothe, Alina; Cruz, Nuno Moreira daThe transition towards a circular economy (CE) has become imperative across various industries, particularly in sectors with significant environmental impacts such as transportation, which accounts for approximately 25% of global CO₂ emissions. This study explores the integration of circular strategies within the micro-mobility sector, focusing on the e-scooter sharing industry and, specifically, on the practices of the company called Tier. By examining the circular initiatives implemented by the company, the research highlights not only the operational feasibility and visibility of circular strategies but also the competitive advantages they can generate. The findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of CE practices in urban mobility and provide practical implications for mobility providers seeking to incorporate circularity as a means of enhancing sustainability and achieving strategic differentiation.
