- Novel polymeric nanoparticles as nanofertilisers for alkaline iron‐deficient conditionsPublication . Pinho, Simão; Santos, Carla; Moniz, Tânia; Granja, Andreia; Sarraguça, Mafalda; Reis, Salette; Rangel, Maria; Vasconcelos, MartaBackground and aims Iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) is a nutritional disorder impacting plants and is prevalent in calcareous alkaline soils, correspond- ing to 30% of the world’s arable land. IDC compro- mises iron uptake in crops such as soybean (Glycine max). To improve the effect of iron fertilisers, we sought to develop a nanotechnology-based interven- tion using polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with Fe(dmpp)3. Methods Nanoparticles were loaded with a fluoro- phore to understand their uptake by soybean. Nano- particles’ physicochemical and release properties were examined. The work comprises a seed soaking study considering untreated plants, and Fe(dmpp)3 solutions or nanosuspensions (NSs) (10 and 20 μM). Results Plants treated with 20 μM NS showed an improvement in morpho-physiological traits and an increase in relevant gene expression vs control. They reached V1 stage 2.5 days faster and V3 2.8 days faster; had a 26% higher SPAD values at stage V3; developed roots that had 39% higher total fresh weight and shoots that were 26% heavier; and regis- tered a 2.25-fold increase in root IRT1 expression and a 3.37-fold increase in leaf ferritin expression. Treat- ment with 10 μM NS led to a 3.31-fold increase in ferritin expression vs control and a 2.49-fold increase vs Fe(dmpp)3 solution at 10 μM. Conclusions The results illustrate the potential of NPs as a seed-soaking agent, promoting plant growth, reducing IDC, and activating molecular-level iron availability responses. Notably, this is the first study attempting to monitor the mobility of fluorescent NPs in soybean plants and the first in employing NPs as nanocarriers of Fe(dmpp)3.

- Developing leadership: the integrative approach of pro-leader intervention programPublication . Rui Gomes, A.; Morais, CatarinaThe impact of leaders on organizational success has been widely documented, and consequently, the leadership training industry has expanded over the past decades. However, this investment has not consistently translated into better leaders. Leadership intervention programs have received notable criticism, including (a) lacking individualization (‘one size fits all’ approach), (b) an emphasis on pre-defined skills, and (c) insufficient consideration of context, disregarding other members’ and organizations’ characteristics. This paper introduces and discusses Pro-Leader, an intervention program based on the Leadership Efficacy Model (LEM), which aims to promote leadership through a comprehensive approach to training. In essence, LEM proposes that leadership efficacy increases if leaders are congruent in how they intend to exert leadership (conceptual cycle of leadership) and how they indeed implement the leadership (practical cycle of leadership), considering also the leadership behaviors they display when exerting influence (leadership styles), as well as their own, team members’, and contextual characteristics (antecedent factors). The Pro-Leader intervention program is structured according to the LEM and trains participants across these three components: leadership cycles, styles, and antecedent factors.
- Mineral deficiency and cardiovascular risk in women with obesityPublication . Santos, Loanne Rocha dos; Melo, Stéfany Rodrigues de Sousa; Severo, Juliana Soares; Cruz, Kyria Jayanne Clímaco; Oliveira, Emyle Horrana Serafim de; Sousa, Thayanne Gabryelle Visgueira de; Morais, Jennifer Beatriz Silva; Soares, Tamires da Cunha; Oliveira, Francisco Erasmo de; Henriques, Gilberto Simeone; Marreiro, Dilina do NascimentoThis study aims to test the association between magnesium, selenium, and calcium and the increased cardiometabolic risk in women with obesity. This was a cross-sectional study that involved 130 women divided into a group of women with obesity (n=69) and a control group (n=61). Statistical analysis was performed through the GraphPad Prism program. The results shown that women with obesity have a lower concentration of the minerals magnesium, selenium and calcium in blood, as well increase in the excretion of these minerals in the urine when compared to the control group. Addition, thit group showed high concentrations of total cholesterol, TGC, VLDL-C, LDL-C, non-HDL, IC I, IC II, interleukine-6 and interleukine-8, which suggests increased risk for cardiovascular disease in this group. There was also a positive correlation between urinary mineral concentrations and anthropometric parameters. The results suggest that excess adiposity is associated with deficiency of the minerals analyzed, as well as revealing the association of this deficiency with increased cardiometabolic risk in the population evaluated.
