- Impact of fermentation on the antioxidant activity and color of haematococcus pluvialis and porphyridium cruentumPublication . Bassani, Joseane C.; Martins, Valter; Barbosa, Joana; Steffens, Juliana; Backes, Geciane T.; Pereira, Hugo; Pintado, Manuela E.; Morais, Alcina M. M. B.; Teixeira, Paula; Morais, Rui M. S. C.Microalgae are emerging as a promising ingredient for the food industry due to their sustainable cultivation and production of a variety of bioactive compounds, including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, antioxidant compounds, and pigments [1]. Among the many cataloged species of microalgae, two stand out in research due to their powerful applications in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic, and food and beverage industries. The first is Haematococcus pluvialis, a unicellular microalga known for its high content of astaxanthin (3,3-dihydroxy-β, β-carotene-4,4- dione), one of the most important natural antioxidants [2]. The second is Porphyridium cruentum, a red marine microalgae that serves as a reservoir of high-value compounds such as carotenoids, sulfated exopolysaccharides (EPSs), β-phycoerythrin (PE), and lipids [3]. Carotenoids and astaxanthins are well-known antioxidants with numerous applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. However, the application of microalgae in food faces challenges related to their intense flavour and odour. Fermentation of microalgae biomass with bacteria has emerged as a promising strategy to mitigate these problems [4]. However, the fermentation process can modify other characteristics of the biomass.
- The planning and implementation of the FDP’s political campaign in the 2021 german federal parliamentary electionPublication . Toffert, Konstantin Florian; Simão, João Duarte Borges Martins de VasconcelosContemporary political campaigning in research and practice encompasses a multitude of different challenges and opportunities driven by transformations in digitalisation, globalisation and societal pluralisation. Trends and dynamics such as professionalisation, marketisation, and hypermediatisation have contributed to a variety of strategies and communication tactics by integrating principles from subdisciplines incorporated within the concept of strategic communication. To provide a tangible perspective on this theoretical complexity, it seems valuable to examine a specific and contemporary political election campaign to grasp the evolving nature of political campaigning fully. This research aims to contribute to the body of knowledge on political campaign strategies by examining the political campaign planning, implementation, and execution of the liberal party FDP in the 2021 German federal parliamentary election campaign. This qualitative case study offers indepth and emic insider perspectives into the FDP’s internal processes and strategies obtained through semi-structured interviews with six campaign experts from the liberal party at the parliamentary level. Following the process of thematic analysis, six central themes from deductive and inductive code segments closely align with established theoretical frameworks. The study’s findings show a highly strategic and professionalised 2021 federal election campaign by the FDP, shaped by three distinct phases and supported by a federal and statelevel alignment of internal and external actors. Two core strategies emerged in the campaign: a personification strategy tailored to the lead candidate and party leader Lindner and the usage of the societal context caused by the coronavirus pandemic to promote liberal values. Hybrid political communication and mobilisation strategies, which were applied both offline and online, completed the election campaign. In summary, this study contributes to the broader discourse of political campaign research, offering significant insights into the strategic process of an election campaign on the federal level in the contemporary German party landscape.
- Seguindo o conselho de Hipócrates: fugir da peste, no século XV portuguêsPublication . Goncalves, Iria; Gago, Alice BorgesKnown and feared in the Western world since ancient times, plagues, cyclical and devastating, left deep marks on society and in the memory of their survivors. Medical knowledge didn’t allow for a cure, so rapid escape was the recommended practice. A practice that not all sections of the urban population, those most affected, could carry out. At the first sign of the plague, all those who could do so, left the city for places where the plague had not yet arrived. This is what happened to Prince João, who took refuge in the city of Beja around 1480, fleeing Lisbon. There, he tried to surround himself with all the conditions that would allow him to stop the plague entering Beja, following the example of what was normally done by the urban governments.
- Consumption patterns and television content preferences of Portuguese higher education studentsPublication . Gouveia, Teresa; Sobral, FilomenaIntroduction: After emerging as a groundbreaking communication technology and experiencing periods of peak popularity, Portuguese free-to-air (FTA) television now operates in a competitive, multiplatform attention market. What are higher education students’ perceptions of FTA TV, and what types of content do they consume? Objective: The main objective of this study was to identify open-signal television consumption trends among a group of Portuguese higher education students. Methods: A case study design was adopted, using an online questionnaire for data collection. The sample consisted of 89 communication and arts students from the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu during the 2023/2024 academic year. Results: Findings show that young people continue to watch FTA TV on television sets more than on mobile devices, underscoring the need for broadcasters to invest in flexibility and diversified programming. News and fictional content remain the students’ preferred genres, given their informational and entertainment value. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of stimulating the domestic FTA market to offer a more competitive range of content. Conclusion: This study provides insights into FTA television consumption trends, useful not only to the academic community but also to the broader media sector, which competes for audience attention in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
