- The communication and perception of sustainability in the healthcare industry in France through social media : a case study of the Aboca brandPublication . Merendell, Irene; Fernandes, Anna Carolina Boechat ChavesThe current internship report is a result of a curricular internship at Aboca. This research aimed to analyze the sustainability communication strategies used by Aboca and its main competitors on social media, and also to measure the impact of these strategies on consumer engagement and perception. The relevance of this problem is linked to the fact that sustainability has become an important issue among consumers and professionals, but it is still not so deeply studied and through a social media communication perspective. For the aim of the study a mixed approach was used combining both qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative methodology guided the majority of the analysis and consisted in a descriptive, comparative, and thematic analysis of the contents published on social media by Aboca and its main competitors. Results showed that having different social media accounts represents a competitive advantage for brands, promoting a higher engagement rate than competitors. Also, the use of videos (e.g. Reels on Instagram) are associated with a higher number of likes than images. The combination of informational, emotional, and promotional tones, in particular the use of the emotional one, seems to represent a competitive advantage. It became clear that the frequency of sustainability messages published by Aboca on social media is higher than its competitors. Regarding the tone, Aboca employs an informational and promotional tone for its messages, generally aligned with the tone of competitors, but less emotional. Concerning the type of sustainable content, Aboca publishes mostly images which deal with not wasting water and generally promoting the reduction of the environmental footprint through good practices. Also, the engagement level of sustainability-related posts from Aboca is lower than the one of its competitors. Despite the fact that sustainability seems to be a competitive advantage, once there is more engagement in these posts than the other ones, sustainability is not enough to be an advantage for Aboca in terms of engagement. Indeed, other factors seem more relevant, such as the number of social media platforms, and number of followers, for example.

- Reduced sense of danger following two years of COVID-19: fear inoculation or growing recklessness?Publication . Coelho, Carlos M.; Suttiwan, Panrapee; Jaroenkajornkij, Nisara; Araújo, Ana S.; Dias, Pedro; Carvalho, Célia B.; Zsido, Andras N.The COVID-19 pandemic led to sudden changes in many people's lives, due to the risky and unpredictable nature of the disease and the consequences of public policies aimed at controlling its spread. As the pandemic progressed, people became more aware of what to do, and restrictions were relaxed. Our aim was to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals' psychological reactions and to examine differences due to long-term exposure between the start of the pandemic in early 2020 and the lifting of restrictions in mid-2022. We used an anonymous online survey at two different points in the COVID-19 pandemic - early 2020 and mid-2022 - and collected data from two independent samples of Portuguese individuals (194 in 2020 and 220 in 2022). Measures of the psychological impact of trauma, emergency response, anxiety and sensation seeking were collected. Participants reported significantly lower levels of negative effects of COVID-19, anxiety and sensation seeking in 2022 compared to 2020. The negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals appears to have gradually decreased between 2020 and 2022.

- Development of a microfluidic paper-based device for the detection and quantification of aluminium in urine : implications for Alzheimer's disease prevention and diagnosisPublication . Costa, Tomás Montenegro; Mesquita, Raquel Beatriz Ribeiro de; Rangel, António Osmaro Santos SilvaThis thesis reports a complete assessment of the development and application of a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µPAD) for the quantitative detection of aluminium in urine, with considerable implications for Alzheimer's disease (AD) research and diagnostics. The core of the research focuses on the design, fabrication, and optimisation of a novel µPAD. This device utilizes the principles of capillary action and colorimetric detection to reach rapid and sensitive aluminium quantification. The µPAD's performance is rigorously assessed against established analytical methods, with particular emphasis on sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility in complex urinary matrices. A key innovation of this work is centred on the integration of a carefully selected chromogenic reagent system within the paper substrate, enabling visual and instrumental quantification of aluminium. The study clarifies the chemical mechanisms essential the colorimetric reaction and explores strategies to enhance signal intensity and stability. Statistical analyses are employed to confirm the µPAD's analytical performance, including limit of detection (LOD) of 0.12 mg/L, limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.40 mg/L, linear range, and inter- and intra-assay variability. The device's robustness is further evaluated through recovery studies and analysis of real urine samples from a cohort of subjects. This research contributes to the field of AD diagnostics by providing a cost-effective, portable, and user-friendly tool for aluminium detection in urine. The developed µPAD shows potential for both clinical and epidemiological applications, potentially facilitating early detection of elevated aluminium levels and monitoring of AD progression. Furthermore, this work lays the groundwork for future investigations into the utility of urinary aluminium as a biomarker for AD risk assessment and therapeutic monitoring.
- A holistic approach to working with global virtual teams : creating a cross-cultural app with service design methodologiesPublication . Ledesma, Victoria Noemi; Ilharco, Fernando Albano Maia de MagalhãesThe increasing number of global virtual teams (GVTs) brings unique challenges associated with their inherent characteristics. This final project presents a holistic approach to these challenges, acknowledging the need for customized and suitable strategies, as well as the development of personalized tools, for companies to thrive in multicultural and remote settings. Utilizing Service Design (SD) as a methodological framework, with the development of its core activities and corresponding methods, a cross-cultural app was designed to address the problems identified in both theory and subsequent research. To provide an integrated solution, a collection of insights and recommendations were introduced alongside the cross-cultural communication app.
