- Parametric models for distributional dataPublication . Brito, Paula; Silva, A. Pedro DuarteWe present parametric probabilistic models for numerical distributional variables. The proposed models are based on the representation of each distribution by a location measure and inter-quantile ranges, for given quantiles, thereby characterizing the underlying empirical distributions in a flexible way. Multivariate Normal distributions are assumed for the whole set of indicators, considering alternative structures of the variance–covariance matrix. For all cases, maximum likelihood estimators of the corresponding parameters are derived. This modelling allows for hypothesis testing and multivariate parametric analysis. The proposed framework is applied to Analysis of Variance and parametric Discriminant Analysis of distributional data. A simulation study examines the performance of the proposed models in classification problems under different data conditions. Applications to Internet traffic data and Portuguese official data illustrate the relevance of the proposed approach.

- To be or not to be reunited : when family reunification in not in the best interest of the unaccompanied minorPublication . Branco, Márcia Maria Mendes de Mansilha; Queiroz, Benedita MenezesThis dissertation aims to examine the right to family reunification for unaccompanied minors in the European Union and its intimate connection to the principle of the best interests of the child. Although this principle is widely reflected in international and European regulations, its application in cases of assessment of requests for family reunification requires a careful case-by-case assessment. The aim of this study is to highlight the inherent vulnerability that accompanies unaccompanied minors in particular, the benefits associated with swift and efficient family reunification, and the possibility that reunification applications may be wrongly assessed, with far-reaching legal, psychological and social consequences.
- Compromise and contradiction, striving in a system one condemns? : a case study of the radical leftist bookshop Piena Libreria in LisbonPublication . Degiorgi, Giulia; Lino, Verena Pia Sonia Monika LindemannThis dissertation dives into the world of radical leftist bookshops, taking Piena Libreria, one such businesses, as a case study. The aim is to explore the contradictions that arise from being a politically involved anti-capitalist business under a capitalist framework. Piena Librearia is an Italian bookshop, founded by Sara Cappai and Elisa Sartor in 2022, with a curated catalogue of feminist, LGBTQI+, anti-racist, and anti-capitalist books, located in the neighbourhood of Arroios, in Lisbon, Portugal. This study implements ethnographic research, combining semistructured interviews and personal observation and analysis, in order to explore how Piena Libreria can survive, and even thrive, while operating under a system it condemns. What are the compromises the bookshop has to make and what contradictions does it fall prey to? My research draws from Kimberley Kinder’s theories in The Radical Bookstore: Counterspace for Social Movements (2021), expanding upon her spatial analysis through a political lens rooted in various works by feminist, Marxist, and anti-capitalist theorists and philosophers. These works were chosen specifically in accord with Piena’s ideology, therefore analyzing the bookshop within its own perceived framework. The research aims at filling a gap in the field by providing a non-Anglo-American perspective on radical bookstores, specifically giving insights to the Portuguese and Italian context. Each of the four analytical chapters of the dissertation address one key contradiction faced by Piena Libreria: worker’s alienation within capitalist business structures, the resemblance between domestic labor and underpaid passion projects work, the bookstore’s symbiotic relationship with its community and its potential role in gentrification processes. Each chapter highlights strategies for navigating these challenges while remaining true to the shop’s radical views. The concluding section summarizes these insights, offering recommendations for Piena and similar commercial activities, therefore contributing to the broader discourse on the cultural and political significance of radical independent businesses in contemporary society.
- Content marketing in the digital age : analyzing the role of quality wellness content in building brand trust among Gen ZPublication . Meza, Pamela Nicole Ponce; Afonso, Carla Susana Moiteiro GanitoThis research focuses on the influence of content marketing in the wellness industry, particularly on the way Gen Z users interact with digital mental health apps. The importance of choosing this study arises from the increasingly important role that digital content plays in shaping consumer trust in wellness brands. The main objective was to analyze how quality content fosters trust among Gen Z users, which promotes sustained use of mental health and wellness apps. The study adopted a qualitative methodology. To collect information from users, it involved the design and application of semi-structured interviews with 12 participants between 23 and 27 years old, all of them part of Generation Z. The theoretical framework explores content marketing strategies, wellness consumption and building trust through digital content. The expected results of the research considered the continued use of digital content applications in well-being, especially in the field of mental health due to the strong pressures to which members of Generation Z are subjected, the immediacy of the responses expected from them and the increasingly varied and accelerated technological changes. The key findings show that most participants value mental health applications for their ease of use, affordability and accessibility, and many are aware of these applications through social networks. This finding constitutes a contribution to the scientific community of digital marketing and influencers, specialists in mental health, as it reveals not only the progressive consumption of these applications, but also the importance of these as tools for the digital natives of the generation Z A notable conclusion is that the representation of mental health awareness on social networks played a fundamental role in the decision to use these applications. In addition, most respondents highlighted that the applications provided essential tools during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping them to manage anxiety.
