- Adolescent hope in the context of nursing care: a scoping reviewPublication . Paramos, Ana; Ferreira, Cláudia; Loureiro, Fernanda; Charepe, ZaidaProblem: Hope is a multidimensional concept with a multidisciplinary approach in different areas of health intervention. From the perspective of the discipline of nursing, the concept of hope in the adolescent has been defined. However, its characterization is not consensually established but is necessary for nurses to be able to plan interventions aimed at its promotion. This scoping review aims at mapping the existing knowledge about adolescent's hope in the context of nursing care and contributing to the improvement of nursing interventions.Eligibility criteria: The review was conducted using Joanna Biggs Institute methodology, and was conducted in Pubmed, Cinahl, Scielo, Ebscohost, Open Grey, Mednar, Worldwidescience, and Science Direct. Inclusion criteria included quantitative, qualitative, or mixed studies as well as systematic reviews and opinion articles, published in Portuguese or English, without publication date limitation, with “adolescents” as the population, “hope” as a concept, and “nursing” as context. Overall studies quality was quite high. The extraction of relevant information from each selected article was summarized in a table that is publicly available at Open Science Framework. Sample: A total of 1259 articles were identified by title and 1220 were excluded by abstract.25 empirical articles met the inclusion criteria. Results: The concept of hope in this population was associated with other concepts such as resilience or well-being. Nursing interventions increase hope with positive outcomes in healthy or with chronic/complex diseases adolescents. Conclusion: Hope is an essential component of nursing care for healthy, with chronic or complex disease adolescents with increased interest in the scientific community. Implications:This review recommends orientations for the nursing process with a central focus in address human responses, nursing interventions, and the results of those interventions.
- A «Frenchman» in Portugal: Bishop D. Hugo of Porto and the transformations of the north-western Iberian Peninsula in the early 12th centuryPublication . Renzi, Francesco; Mariani, Andrea; Silva, Maria João Oliveira e; Amaral, Luís CarlosThe aim of this article is to study Bishop of Porto D. Hugo, a key figure to understand the transformation of Portugal in the 12th century. Probably ailing from France, he was archdeacon in Compostela under Diego Gelmírez and consecrated bishop by Maurice of Braga. D. Hugo dealt with the most important problems of his time: the conflict between the See of Compostela and Braga, the political evolution of the County of Portugal and the relations with the Papacy. The study of D. Hugo reveals a very peculiar image of a medieval bishop: clergyman, politician, writer and tireless traveller.
- Foot and ankle disorders in nurses exposed to prolonged standing environments: a scoping reviewPublication . Bernardes, Rafael A.; Caldeira, Sílvia; Parreira, Pedro; Sousa, Liliana B.; Apóstolo, João; Almeida, Inês F.; Santos-Costa, Paulo; Stolt, Minna; Guardado Cruz, ArménioBackground: Prolonged standing environments constitute an occupational risk factor for nurses, particularly for developing foot and ankle disorders. The definitions and potential relationship to hours spent walking or standing are poorly understood. This scoping review aimed to synthesize the main disorders found on nurses’ ankles and feet, their prevalence, the influence of hours spent walking or standing, and gender differences. Methods: This review followed a previously published protocol. Primary and secondary studies were retrieved from relevant databases from December 2020 to March 2021. Potential articles were collated to Mendeley, and two independent reviewers assessed the title and abstracts. Studies meeting inclusion criteria were included. Two researchers retrieved and reviewed the full text of these studies independently. A predetermined extraction tool was used to retrieve relevant data, summarized in a tabular and narrative format. Findings: The most common disorder was pain, followed by numbness, burning feet, bunions, structural deformities, and calluses. Prevalence differed among studies, depending on settings and specific local policies. Discussion: Various foot and ankle disorders and related variables have been found, with clear gaps that may be addressed in the future. Conclusion/Applications to Practice:: Few studies have focused on nurses’ foot and ankle disorders. Mapping signs and symptoms may contribute to the future development of preventive interventions for nurses’ workplaces.
- Pro-environmental messages have more effect when they come from less familiar brandsPublication . Herédia-Colaço, VeraPurpose: This research aims to compare consumer responses to pro-environmental communication and appeals to recycle packaging when these messages come from a high-familiarity versus a low-familiarity brand. Design/methodology/approach: Two online between-subjects experimental studies evaluate consumer perceptions and the willingness to comply with recycling appeals in response to pro-environmental communications from a high-familiarity versus a low-familiarity brand. To test the hypotheses, the studies examine the moderating role of sustainability habits and the mediating role of shared environmental responsibility. Findings: Findings show that communicating a brand’s adoption of sustainable packaging is more salient to consumers when the appeal comes from a low-familiarity rather than a high-familiarity brand, especially when sustainability habits are weaker. The mediating role of shared environmental responsibility partly explains consumers’ commitment to act pro-environmentally. Research limitations/implications: Sustainability officials and policymakers should consider the impact of pro-environmental interventions that encourage collective recycling between brands and consumers. Practitioners are encouraged to examine revised waste management schemes such as extended producer responsibility programs to elicit the collaboration of consumers in initiatives that boost recycling and stimulate pro-environmental behaviors. Originality/value: Using the diagnosticity–accessibility framework and habit theory, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this research is among the first to empirically examine the role of sustainability habits in consumer responses to pro-environmental brand communications. It also highlights consumers’ willingness to comply with brands’ take-back programs in a shared effort to reduce plastic waste and encourage a circular economy.
- Music therapy assessment with the IMCAP-ND: a pilot studyPublication . Raposo, Marisa M.; Abreu, Ana Maria; Dionizio, Leticia L.; Leite, Teresa; Castro-Caldas, AlexandreBackground: Music therapy (MT) appears to be a valuable complementary intervention for children diagnosed with neurodevelopmental conditions, namely, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), who often present cognitive, academic, communicative, and social difficulties. Music therapy has been increasingly recommended as a standard support service for communication and social interaction in this specific neuropediatric setting. Objective: The aim of this pilot study was to determine the recruitment and protocol feasibility of music therapy for autistic children and explore trends towards the clinical utility of the IMCAP-ND[i] quantitative measure on assessing the focus on sound receptions, joint attention, turn-taking, auditory perception, sensory integration, social interaction, entrainment, and empathy, as a preparation for a future study wherein we will pursue with an MT intervention assessment. Furthermore, here we use the European Portuguese translated version of the IMCAP-NDPT scales to contribute to its validation and adaptation. Methods: Five autistic children received a weekly music therapy session of approximately 45 minutes for six months, totaling a minimum of 20 and maximum of 24 completed sessions per child. The IMCAP-NDPT and the Griffiths Mental Development Scales (GMDS) scales were applied pre- and post-test. Results: We tested the research design and the session’s protocol. All participants completed MT intervention and showed increase in social-emotional capacities, cognitive and perception skills, and overall responsiveness. However, our results indicate a need to review the inclusion criteria concerning participants with a single diagnosis (ASD), previous contacts with musical instruments, and the application of standardized music therapy settings. Conclusions: The design and protocol were perceived as acceptable and feasible, though some improvements were suggested for subsequent original research, and the IMCAP-NDPT version was considered usable. Our initial findings suggest the potential of music therapy for autistic children. Further intervention with efficacy assessment through a larger-scale randomized trial is needed, considering the content based on pilot findings.

- Predicting the equity risk premium using the smooth cross-sectional tail risk: the importance of correlationPublication . Faias, José AfonsoI provide a new monthly cross-sectional measure of stock market tail risk, SCSTR, defined as the average of the daily cross-sectional tail risk, rather than the tail risk of the pooled daily returns within a month. Through simulations, I find that SCSTR better captures monthly tail risk rather than merely the tail risk on specific days within a month. In an extended period from 1964 until 2018, this difference is important in generating strong in- and out-of-sample predictability and performs better than the historical risk premium and other commonly-used predictors for short- and long-term horizons.
- Prevalence of nutritional inadequacy in children aged 12–36 months: EPACI Portugal 2012Publication . Nazareth, Margarida; Pinto, Elisabete; Severo, Milton; Graça, Pedro; Lopes, Carla; Rêgo, CarlaAdequate nutritional intake in the first years of life is crucial for future health. The purpose of this study is to assess the adequacy of nutritional intake in Portuguese toddlers. The EPACI Portugal 2012 is a cross-sectional study of a representative sample of toddlers (n = 2230), aged between 12 and 36 months. Data on diets were collected by trained interviewers. The current analysis included 853 children with full data from 3-day food diaries completed by parents/caregivers. Intakes of energy, macro- and micronutrients were estimated through Statistical Program to Assess Dietary Exposure (SPADE). Nutritional adequacy was evaluated using Dietary Reference Values established by the European Food Safety Authority. A large proportion of children exceeded the recommended energy intake. The median daily protein intake was 4.7 g/kg/day, five times more than that recommended. About 9% and 90% of the children consumed a lower proportion of energy than the lower limit of the Reference Intake range for carbohydrates and fat, respectively. Around a third consumed less fibre and magnesium and 100% less vitamin D than the recommended Adequate Intake (AI). Almost a third consumed less vitamin A than the recommended Average Requirement (AR) and 86% of the children showed excessive sodium consumption. Portuguese toddlers consumed a low proportion of energy from fat, had energy and protein intakes above the recommendations and excessive intakes of sodium, and inadequate intakes of vitamin A. Every child consumed less than the recommended AI for vitamin D.
