- Coping as a mediator and moderator between psychological distress and disordered eating behaviors and weight changes during the COVID-19 pandemicPublication . Machado, Bárbara Cesar; Moreira, Célia S.; Correia, Marta; Veiga, Elisa; Gonçalves, SóniaPrevious research has already shown the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on college students’ well-being and mental health. Eating problems and weight gain due to changes in eating habits and physical activity experienced during this period have also been noticed. However, few studies have explored the role of students’ resources as used during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as coping strategies. This study aimed to (1) explore the associations among psychological distress, disordered eating, coping strategies, and weight changes; (2) examine the moderating role of coping strategies in the process of weight gain and weight loss; and (3) study the mediating role of coping strategies in the process of weight gain and weight loss. The participants in this study were 772 students at a Portuguese university. The data collected included sociodemographic data and three self-reported questionnaires (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale; Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire; Brief COPE) during the first few months of the pandemic, which included a 72-day full national lockdown. The results showed that depression, anxiety, stress, and disordered eating were related to increased weight. Guilt, denial, self-distraction, use of substances, and behavior disinvestment were also related to increased weight. Behavioral disinvestment had a strong mediating effect on weight gain. Additionally, planning, positive reframing, and acceptance all showed a moderating effect between psychological distress and weight changes. In conclusion, coping strategies allow for a better understanding of the mechanisms by which psychological distress and disordered eating were related to weight changes during the pandemic.
- The impact of a curriculum for resilience promotion in deaf children and adolescentsPublication . Freitas, Eunice; Simões, Celeste; Mineiro, Ana; Rosa, Pedro J.; Santos, Anabela C.Resilience is an interactive process involving internal skills that should be promoted, especially in the early stages of development. This study aims to adapt and implement two themes from the European Curriculum for Resilience Promotion – RESCUR, namely, ‘Developing Communication Skills’ and ‘Establishing and Maintaining Healthy Relationships’, for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students. The study included 37 children and adolescents from three Portuguese regions and its impact was evaluated through the perspectives of the students, their guardians and their teachers. Each 90-minute session was implemented weekly. The sessions followed the RESCUR curriculum structure with necessary adaptations to the mindfulness activities, stories, role-play and worksheets. The mean scores increased from pre- to post-intervention assessment on all instruments, namely, KIDSCREEN-10 (children/adolescents), KIDSCREEN-10 (guardians) and CYRM-28 (teachers). The implementation of adapted curricula promoting resilience seems to be beneficial to DHH children, allowing the development of specific resilience-associated skills, and thus enhancing health, well-being and quality of life.
- The primary nursing care model and inpatients’ nursing-sensitive outcomes: a systematic review and narrative synthesis of quantitative studiesPublication . Gonçalves, Isabel; Mendes, Diana Arvelos; Caldeira, Sílvia; Jesus, Élvio; Nunes, ElisabeteBackground: The delivery of quality, safe, and patient-centered care is foundational for professional practice. The primary nursing model allows nurses to have excellent knowledge about patients and families and to plan and coordinate care from admission to discharge, with better management of health situations. Nurses play a crucial role in improving patients’ outcomes, namely those sensitive to nursing care. The knowledge of the relationship between the primary nursing model and the nursing-sensitive outcomes provides new scientific evidence that strengthens the relevance of this nursing care organization model in the inpatients’ health outcomes. This systematic review describes the relationship between nurse-sensitive inpatients’ outcomes and the primary nursing care model. Methods: A systematic review was conducted with a narrative synthesis, and the following databases were searched: MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Nursing & Allied Health Collection, SciELO Collections, and Cochrane. Results: A total of 22 full texts were assessed, of which five were included in the study according to the selection criteria. The analysis results indicated that the primary nursing care model was related to nursing-sensitive patient safety outcomes. Patients’ experience was also considered a nursing-sensitive outcome, namely in the satisfaction with nursing care. Conclusion: The negative outcomes are clearly related to the primary nursing care model. There is scarce research that relates primary nursing to positive outcomes, such as patients’ functional status and self-care abilities, and more studies are needed.
- Barriers, risks and risk management strategies in European insect supply chainsPublication . Niyonsaba, H. H.; Höhler, J.; van der Fels-Klerx, H. J.; Slijper, T.; Alleweldt, F.; Kara, S.; Zanoli, R.; Costa, A. I. A.; Peters, M.; Meuwissen, M. P.M.Despite technological developments and regulatory improvements, most actors in the insect sector still face many challenges and uncertainties. While previous research mainly focused on the perception of domain-specific challenges and risks or has been limited to specific stages in the supply chain, this study aims to determine how stakeholders perceive the importance of past barriers and future risks along European insect supply chains, and to identify the applied risk management strategies. Data were collected from stakeholders across four stages of the supply chain (rearers (n=23), processors (n=8), and insect derived feed (n=14), and food (n=12) producers) through an online survey. In total, 60 different barriers and risks, as well as 20 different risk management strategies, were evaluated. We find that stakeholders across all stages of the supply chain perceived ‘financial, cost and market’ barriers and risks as most important, specifically referring to the lack of financial investments and price and demand uncertainties. In addition, legal restrictions were perceived to constrain upscaling opportunities across all supply chain stages. Worker and food safety barriers were generally perceived as least important. The main risk management strategies across all stages of the supply chain related to investments in technologies enhancing stability of both the quality and the quantity of insects and derived products. Stakeholders were most optimistic about the future reduction of ‘operational’ and ‘financial, cost and market’ risks. To further stimulate upscaling of the sector, we recommend to enhance financing opportunities, and to improve authorisations for the use of different substrates and the production of a wider set of insect-based ingredients for feed and food products.
- Is co-creation still an innovative innovation strategy across generations?Publication . Sinz, Steffen; Costa, CláudiaCo-creation, the process of involving customers in the innovation process, has gained popularity in recent years as a way for companies to tap into customer knowledge, skills, and insights and to create value for both the company and their customers. Co-creation as an innovation strategy has already been used for many years. However, the extent to which co creation is still perceived as an innovative innovation strategy among younger generations has not been researched. This paper aims to review the literature on co-creation and innovation to answer the question: Is co-creation still perceived as an innovative innovation strategy? A systematic review of the literature was conducted, and the results suggest that co-creation is still perceived as an innovative innovation strategy. In order to test the differences in perceptions between generations, a survey was conducted to test these possible differences. Our study found that younger generations have still higher perceptions of innovation ability, perceive higher trust in companies and their products, and have higher quality perceptions of products which result from a co-creation strategy. The study also found that the level of digital literacy of consumers has a partial influence on these perceptions. Further research is needed to more fully understand the factors that influence the perceived innovativeness of co creation and to identify best practices for implementing co-creation as an innovation strategy.
- Sustainability as a strategy : the B-Corp certification’s effect on consumers’ willingness to payPublication . Verhaar, Friso Dirk Reinier; Romeiro, PauloAs more companies are becoming B-Corp certified, the effects of this certification on consumers are of increasing importance. By becoming certified, companies can show that they meet a high standard of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on various factors. This research aims to understand the effect that the B-Corp certification has on willingness to pay (WTP) of consumers, in comparison to when another certification, or no certification is presented. The product used for the comparison is a crunchy muesli box. Furthermore, the mediating role of value perception is tested. Knowledge on what the certification means, and consumer decision-making styles are tested as moderators. By analyzing data collected through an online questionnaire, several hypotheses were tested. Findings have shown that there is no direct influence of various sustainability certifications on WTP. There is no significant mediating effect of value perception on WTP. Decision-making styles do not moderate the relation between the certifications and WTP. Finally, when information about B-Corps was given to respondents, their WTP for the B-Corp stimulus was significantly higher. It is therefore advised to B-Corps to include B-Corp information in communication strategies to be able to ask a price premium.
- Do goal orientations really influence performance?Publication . Sousa, Carlos M.; Coelho, Filipe; Silva, Susana C.Purpose: The creativity of retail employees seems to be of the utmost importance for ensuring the performance of organizations in service settings. This paper contributes to the existing theory by investigating the direct and indirect effects of goal orientations on the creativity and performance of retail employees. The authors propose a framework depicting the relationships between goal orientations and employee creativity and performance, including the intervening effects of self-efficacy and customer orientation. Design/methodology/approach: The study was conducted with retail frontline employees of a large retail bank in Portugal. The sample consists of 267 valid responses. Structural equations are used by applying the maximum likelihood method to test the conceptual framework. Findings: Results are broadly supportive of the hypotheses. Learning orientation is, directly and indirectly, related to creativity, but only indirectly to performance. As to performance orientation, it is indirectly related to creativity through self-efficacy and customer orientation, and directly as well as indirectly, to performance. The authors investigate the extent to which the effects of goal orientations on creativity and performance are mediated by self-regulatory mechanisms, namely self-efficacy, and customer orientation. Originality/value: The results recognize that learning and performance goals are neither mutually exclusive nor contradictory, which collide with past empirical evidence showing that learning goals are generally associated with more favorable outcomes and performance goals with more negative or equivocal ones. These outcomes underscore the need and relevance for managers to foster both goal orientations to promote the creativity and performance of retail employees, representing a particularly salient issue in retail businesses characterized by significant interpersonal interactions.
- Critical patient environmental comfort: a scoping review protocolPublication . Moura, Derek; Andrade, Débora; Silva, Carla; Pinto, IgorIntroduction: It is important to understand the concept of comfort as a whole in order to build a care intervention plan that is appropriate to the needs of the person. A quiet and peaceful environment enhances the person's adherence to treatment, which allows better outcomes. Conclusion: The development of knowledge about nursing interventions in the context of critical care will allow the mapping of a set of interventions that focus on promoting the comfort of the person in critical situation.
