- How does brand-cause fit influence the success of CrM campaigns?Publication . Campelos, Inês Padilha; Silva, Susana Costa e; Machado, Joana CésarInvestment in Cause-Related Marketing (CrM) is growing, as consumers are becoming more socially concerned and demanding in terms of corporate socially responsible practices. Furthermore, the use of CrM can result in several benefits for the company, the cause supported and consumers. Since brand-cause fit is a key determinant of the success of CrM, this study will analyse the underlying factors that affect the relationship between brand-cause fit and consumer response to CrM. A qualitative research strategy was employed, using a case study methodology with a sample of five CrM campaigns. Findings suggest that the impact of brand-cause fit on purchase intention is often affected by factors, such as consumer-cause involvement and corporate image, which decrease the effect of consumers’ evaluations of fit. A favourable corporate image, positive track record of CrM initiatives, high consumer-cause engagement and cause relevance increase consumer trust in the company/brand and affect the success of CrM.
- Fortification of coconut water with microencapsulated grape pomace extract towards a novel electrolyte beverage: biological, sensorial and quality aspectsPublication . Costa, Joana R.; Monteiro, Maria João; Tonon, Renata V.; Cabral, Lourdes M.C.; Pastrana, Lorenzo; Pintado, Manuela E.A bioactive grape pomace extract (GPE) rich in polyphenols was encapsulated into alginate (GPE-Alg) or chitosan (GPE-CS) microparticles, later incorporated into coconut water. Biological and sensory properties were evaluated. Storage was performed at 4 ˚C followed by quality assessment. Evaluation of coconut water after gastrointestinal digestion on the growth pathogens and probiotic bacteria showed that the fortification with GPE-Alg and GPE-CS decreased the growth rate of pathogens when compared to non-fortified water, while promoted the growth of different bifidobacteria and lactobacilli strains. Sensory analysis allowed to conclude that the incorporation of GPE-Alg and GPE-CS did not promote significant differences in most of evaluated attributes, including aroma and flavor. The storage at 4 ˚C allowed a reduced degradation rate of total phenolics and anthocyanins for GPE-Alg and GPE-CS fortified beverage, with the half-life time of phenolic acids higher for GPE-Alg beverage and the half-life time of anthocyanins higher for GPE-CS fortified water. This study opens the opportunity in the application of food by-products in the development of novel efficient functional foods and beverages.

- Diversity of metallophytes and metal(loid)-tolerant bacterial strains in a portuguese mine for phytotechnologies purposesPublication . Sousa, A. S. S.; Pereira, S. I. A.; Moreira, H.; Cunha, J.; Vila-Viçosa, C.; Castro, P.M.L.Soil contamination with metal(loid)s due to anthropogenic activities, such as mining, is a worldwide issue that affects ecosystem functioning and human health. Efforts are currently made to restore these soils through sustainable and economically strategies. Phytotechnologies stand out as reliable and ecologically sound options, focusing on the use of plants and their associated microorganisms to reclaim contaminated lands and decrease pollutant linkages. These options can also provide economic revenues, integrating soil restoration into the circular economy concept. Mining areas host metallophytes, either excluders or (hyper)accumulators, and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), adapted to high concentrations of metal(loid)s, that can be used in phytoremediation strategies. The Borralha mine is a deactivated tungsten producer located in the northern Portugal, in which the ending of mineral extraction left several open-air tailings highly contaminated with metal(loid)s, such as Cu, Zn, Cd, As and Pb. This study aimed to assess the most abundant metallophytes and characterize the culturable bacterial community present in Borralha mine tailings for biotechnological purposes. Plant biodiversity was assessed over 1 year period, covering the different seasons. Based on plant taxonomy, a total of 14 plant species were identified, with some species (e.g., Agrostis capillaris, Cytisus striatus, Erica arborea, Pinus pinaster, Rubus ulmifolius, Salix caprea and Sedum arenarium) showing potential to be used in remediation strategies. For soil bacteria characterization, a composite soil sample was collected from vegetated and non-vegetated areas in the tailing zone. A total of 65 bacterial isolates were isolated and characterized genotypically and phenotypically (e.g. metal tolerance and plant growth promoting traits). Several bacterial strains showed potential to be used as bioinoculants in assisted- phytoremediation approaches
- Internationalisation in scholarly publishing in Croatia through the lens of bibliometric overview of the Journal Društvena IstraživanjaPublication . Dabić, Marina; Švarc, Jadranka; Vlačić, Božidar; Lažnjak, JasminkaThe goal of this research is to shed additional light on the internationalisation of scholarly publishing in Croatia through research based on the bibliometric analysis of the journal Društvena Istraživanja (DI). The first part of this research is dedicated to bibliometric analysis of DI since its conception in 1992, while the second part discusses the internationalisation of scientific journals in Croatia, relying on the critical analysis of relevant literature and the bibliometric characteristics of DI. The results of this research call into question the relevance of the existing scientific publishing policy to contribute to quality research papers and their internationalisation. The research provides implications for both editorial and publishing policies, as well as science policies in general.
- New microfluidic paper-based analytical device for iron determination in urine samplesPublication . Ferreira, Francisca T. S. M.; Catalão, Karina A.; Mesquita, Raquel B. R.; Rangel, António O. S. S.Iron is an important micronutrient involved in several mechanisms in the human body and can be an important biomarker. In this work, a simple and disposable microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µPAD) was developed for the quantification of iron in urine samples. The detection was based on the colorimetric reaction between iron(II) and bathophenanthroline and the reduction of iron(III) to iron(II) with hydroxylamine. The developed µPAD enabled iron determination in the range 0.07–1.2 mg/L, with a limit of detection of 20 µg/L and a limit of quantification of 65 µg/L, thus suitable for the expected values in human urine. Additionally, targeting urine samples, the potential interference of the samples color was overcome by incorporating a sample blank assessment for absorbance subtraction. Stability studies revealed that the device was stable for 15 days prior to usage and that the formed colored product was stable for scanning up to 3 h. The accuracy of the developed device was established by analyzing urine samples (#26) with the developed µPAD and with the atomic absorption spectrometry method; the relative deviation between the two sets of results was below 9.5%. - Hope in the squatted space: the case of metelkovaPublication . Kovič, AmadeaThis paper takes as its point of departure the Autonomous Cultural Centre Metelkova City (AKC Metelkova mesto), a squatted area of more than twelve thousand square meters that is today recognised as a self-organised autonomous zone, located at the heart of Ljubljana. After the partition of Yugoslavia, the complex of ex-military headquarters of the Yugoslav Army remained as a remnant of the past. However, its social function soon mutated when it became an artistic hub, hosting activities of various cultural and non-governmental organisations. Furthermore, it has established its own set of rules, declaring a strict policy of non-tolerance for racism, homophobia, sexism, and ageism. This paper aims to explore the juxtaposition between Metelkova as a bubble space with its unique set of rules, fostering a system of self-governance, and the greater context of authority within which it is embedded. While it refuses to be submissive to the overarching functional structures in place, Metelkova is forced to continuously navigate the balance between individual freedom of its users and the need for a clear system of self-governance, enabling it to be a safe communal space. The purpose of this critical analysis is to unravel multiple layers of the interrelated relationship between Metelkova’s squatting status, leaving the space and its community in a limbo of constant uncertainty, and the hope for utopia, expressed in its system of self-governance. Building upon Ntounis and Kanellopoulou (2017)’s proposition of place branding as a key element in normalisation of legally ambiguous autonomous zones such as Metelkova or similar Christiania in Denmark, as well as Mouffe’s understanding of critical cultural and artistic practices as vital for the development of agonistic public spaces (2013, 91-93), I argue that the squatting element that defines the continuous (re-)creation of Metelkova is intrinsic for its development as an agonistic public space.
- “Most voted women” - representations of gender in the Portuguese media coverage of the 2021 presidential electionsPublication . Faria, RitaThe aim of this research is to examine the media representation of women politicians in the Portuguese press with a view to understand whether there are differing linguistic practices in how media discourse describes and represents gender. The focus of this study is the 2021 campaign for presidential elections in Portugal, in which five men candidates, including the incumbent President, faced two women candidates of opposing political fields, Ana Gomes and Marisa Matias. The study analyses the coverage of the presidential campaign in the run up to the election by extracting reports from a number of print media outlets (for the sake of comparability and viability, the media selected were traditional, print media outlets – Van der Pas & Aaldering 2020 – such as established broadsheets in the Portuguese public sphere). The reports are then examined by means of a mixed method approach, hinging on 1) a more discursive-analysis based approach looking at words, lexicalisation, presupposition (Lakoff 2003) and collocations, and 2) a more content-based approach examining topic selection such as personal and/or family traits and/or a focus on personal lives (Rohrbach et al. 2020) in order to learn whether the Portuguese media covers gender differently and whether there is any gender bias of significance (Fernandez-Garcia 2016). Preliminary research conducted so far suggests the following: an interplay between gender and class of some significance, with the ‘working class’ woman candidate often described by means of her ties to her hometown and family background; emotionally loaded language to describe the performance of the two women politicians in the coverage of campaign debates; in the aftermath of the election, the media coverage of the two women politicians resorted to collocations and adjectives which again lent a sentimental load to their representation (for example, magoada – “hurt” –, arrumada – “being over and done with,” an idiom), a discursive choice which was mostly absent from the coverage of the remaining men politicians. Because this is ongoing research, the paper will focus on the differing gendered linguistic representations in the media which have been collected so far relative to the women politicians who ran for President in 2021.
