- A media and entertainment colossus : the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney CompanyPublication . Krafczyk, Marius; Behr, Patrick GottfriedThe acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company was one of the largest in the past years and was subject to a fierce bidding war between Disney and Comcast. Ultimately, Disney won the bidding but the rationale was unclear. It was found that the rising strength of over-the-top content service providers like Netflix are threatening the traditional business of media companies like Disney. Cinema admissions are decreasing and people are turning their backs on Television in the favor of online streaming. Disney tries to mitigate the threat of transforming streamers by entering the direct-to-consumer market with its own service, Disney+. Shortly after the management approved the new strategy, the opportunity of Fox came across and Disney evaluated the transaction with a new perspective. It understood that it could leverage Fox’s brands to strengthen the competitiveness of Disney+, while simultaneously cross monetize the brands within its ecosystem. In addition, Disney’s market power in the traditional business enhances, due to the consolidated market share in the Film and TV segment, giving the company control over vital elements in the value chain. Furthermore, evidence was found that Disney was valuing Fox higher than the market, which provides arguments that it assumes a booming business or expects high monetization capabilities of Fox’s assets. Therefore, the transaction supports Disney’s entry into a new market and strengthens the current market position. Both complement the main goal, the growth of The Walt Disney Company.
- Wash it all away : the impact of the Lava Jato scandal on FDI stocks in BrazilPublication . Sedlmeir, Jakob; Campello, DanielaThis paper investigates if and how the detection and rigorous prosecution of a corruption scheme in Brazil affected German FDI flows to the country. To do so, the so-called Lava Jato investigation was taken as a shock to German investors. Using a synthetic control research design we show, that German investors indeed invested less in Brazil than it would have been the case without the scandal occurring. We estimate the costs of the scandal only with regards to German investments at 4.6 billion Euros between January 2014 and December 2017. We find our results to be significant at the 6.7% level, meaning that an effect of this size is quite unlikely to be the pure result of chance. The findings provide evidence for the theory that foreign investors are sensitive to perceived levels of corruption in emerging markets, even though those countries represent a huge market potential.
- Managing continuity and change in development context : the BNDES case studysPublication . Villari, Giovanni; Faria, AlexandreToday, the tsunami of digital changes within Third World development organizations is bringing about new forces of change which jeopardize the social purpose of these organizations. Indeed, although digitization offers unique opportunities to create sustainable development, it vehemently shakes deeply-rooted change-continuity dynamics. At this juncture, development managers play the lead role in finding the right balance between change-continuity forces by jointly aiming efforts at development and embracing the opportunities presented by digital changes. The thesis investigates the change-continuity dynamics within the latest development strategy of the Brazilian Development Bank. In particular, through a flexible strategic framework, it attempts to understand if managers of the Digital Operations and Channels Division of the Bank have been able to implement a strategy of innovation which embraces both change and continuity forces and, therefore, aims at sustainable development. Finally, the research shows that, even though neither of the two forces has overwhelmed the other in the short-term, in the long-term, adversarial forms of resistance in the workplace and misled efforts at development may undermine the change-continuity interplay and, as a consequence, the social purpose of the Bank Division.
