  • Food museums for afterthought : narratives of identify and heritage in the Cheese Museum at Peraboa

    Food has long been a universal feature of any society; a cultural marker, and a tangible element for satisfying physiologic needs and a medium for developing arrays of images and ideas. Museums, on another hand, are a recent modern institution, as we conceive it, and have been constantly interpreted and reinterpreted as bulwarks of knowledge, patrons of education, and a medium to reinforce social and power dynamics. Food museums represent a novel museological path to investigate, think and act, from a polyvalent and ingenious perspective, by querying the subjects of food and commensality, as well as new possibilities for practices and strategies in discussing the representation and cultural negotiation in contemporaneity. Thus, this research examines the ways in which a specific case-study, the Cheese Museum in Peraboa, enables alternative readings on the relationship of this foodstuff with symbols and narratives of a culture. Following a semiotic perspective of cultural theory, the investigation explored the narrative components of the Serra da Estrela cheese, its scenery, characters and myths, which expose and communicate cultural identities and cultural heritage in the Portuguese context. The Peraboa Cheese Museum demonstrated to be a valuable venture in investigating how food museums carry narratives that seek to portray identities and heritage that extend from local to national levels, and vice versa.

Entre elas figura o AtoM – Access to memory, de cujo uso em Portugal fazemos um breve recenseamento. Apresentamos a Plataforma de Arquivos Pessoais e de Instituições Religiosas (PAPIR), criada em 2015, com recurso ao AtoM, referindo o processo da sua criação, caracterizando os recursos que oferece e identificando os desafios que enfrenta.
