- Protective factors and resilience in adolescents: the mediating role of self-regulationPublication . Dias, Paulo César; Cadime, IreneThe main goal of this study was to explore the mediating role of self-regulation in the relationship between protective factors and resilience. The sample was composed of 393 adolescents who attended secondary education. Participants were assessed using the Healthy Kids Resilience Assessment to collect information about four protective factors–school, home, community and peer environment–and resilience. Two dimensions of self-regulation–goal setting and impulse control–were assessed using the Short Self-Regulation Questionnaire. The results indicated that home, community and peer environment predicted significantly the levels of resilience of the students. Home environment was the main resilience predictor. Goal setting and impulse control abilities were also predictors of resilience but no evidence was found for a mediating effect of the self-regulation dimensions on the relationship between protective factors and resilience. Results are discussed and implications for prevention from a developmental perspective are presented.
Burgues, Ana Setién; Nobre, Ana; Mora, António ChenollIn this article, we aim to identify the components of the learning-teaching process for foreign languages that better adapt themselves to different teaching environments (face-to-face and online) with the objective of observing how the optimization of different methodological strategies can result in the optimization of learning. Likewise, we will identify some of the learning environmental constructions that have been carried out in a completely “online” environment (Universidade Aberta) as well as in a face-to-face but digitally enriched context (Universidade Católica Portuguesa). In this way, we propose a methodological design based on the adaptability of both the cognitive components of the students and the context in which learning takes place. It is committed to the diversification not only of contents, but also of the different ways of understanding learning.
- Utopia as common goodPublication . Pereira, AméricoThe narrative that presents the "polis" of "Utopia" does not build an image of a "place without place", but demonstrates that which could and should be – at least structurally – the form of a real community, the one that erects itself as an act of "common-wealth/common-good/common-goodness". The utopian societies, the ones that should have "no place" in human affairs, are the ones that exist historically. So it is really an inversion of "topoi" the one that Sir Thomas operates, making us remember that the reality of humanity is not a society of Hobbes like wolves, but a community of Augustine like good-doers, even if not perfect, even if never perfect.
- Integrative literature review nursing interventions aimed at the family of the person in end of life under palliative sedationPublication . Moura, Silvina Maria da Costa; Gonçalves, João Pedro Afonso; Ribeiro, Patrícia Pontífice deObjective: Identify in the literature the nursing interventions aimed at the family of terminal patients at the time of the decision-taking concerning palliative sedation. Method: An integrative revision of the literature using the electronic research platform EBSCOhost. The research was conducted on the 5th October 2014, establishing as research limiters, publications of the last five years, which were available in full text. The research was based on 19 publications, of which, after the submission of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulted on 9 publications. Results: Of the nursing interventions, the ones that were more recurrent in the literature were connected with supporting/ comforting the family, considering their complex needs, involving them in the decision-taking in the beginning of the palliative sedation and in the active care during this process, promoting teaching during care and preparing them for the death process. Conclusions: It`s possible to verify the need for further studies on this issue, essentially on what concerns the nurses, as applying these interventions to the family could prevent the occurrence of pathological mourning.
- Overview of the radiographers’ practice in 65 healthcare centers using digital mammography systems in PortugalPublication . Reis, Cláudia Sá dos; Pascoal, Ana; Radu, Lucian; Oliveira, Mário Fartaria de; Alves, JoãoPurpose: To assess current practices in digital mammography (DM) in Portuguese healthcare providers using digital systems. To investigate compliance with European standards regarding mean glandular dose and quality control practice and to identify optimisation needs. Methods: Two questionnaires, targeted at breast radiographers and chief radiographers, were designed and applied in 65 imaging departments offering DM. Questions fielded were focused on the staff profile and technical/clinical practice. Results: Prior to starting their activity in DM, 70% (82 out of 118) of the respondents received training in DM. The practice in 29 out of 59 providers was established by the manufacturers’ recommendations for image acquisition. Variations were observed between radiographers who belong to the same provider namely the selection of exposure parameters such as the target-filter combination and automatic mode. The use of the manual exposure mode was reported for imaging breast implants (44%) and surgical specimens (22%). The main causes of repeat examinations were skin folding (21%) and absence of pectoral muscle (PM) (20%). Conclusions: The study revealed opportunities to optimise radiographers’ practice in DM regarding the selection of exposure parameters. A robust and consistent training programme in DM and established local protocols can help to reduce the variations observed and improve clinical practice. Main Messages: • Radiographers adopted different practices selecting AEC modes and T/F combinations. • Radiographer practice is more consistent using DR than using CR systems. • The main causes for rejecting images were the visibility of skin folding and PM absence. • Radiographers were partly unaware of the dose indicator. • Radiographers’ training needs: QC, interventional procedures and breast dose optimisation.
- Integrative literature review - nursing interventions in the stress control of the family of the sick person in a critical conditionPublication . Gonçalves, João Pedro Afonso; Moura, Silvina Maria da Costa; Rabiais, Isabel Cristina MascarenhasAims: Identify which nursing interventions should be implemented in the stress control of the family of the sick person in a critical condition. Methods: Integrative literature review to explore the evidence of the last five years, using the EBSCOhost electronic search platform. Of the 67 articles found, 15 were considered potentially relevant, thus joining our sample. Results: The nursing interventions found in the literature were split into five areas of “action”. These include the need of nurses to assess the Family/ Caregivers Stress and family coping, implementing nursing interventions centered on each family, establishing an empathetic relationship and trust that facilitates and promotes family involvement in the care process as well as in the decision-making processes. They should also facilitate the communication with the family promoting active listening, informing them about the care of their relative, stating their support in this process, comforting them and fostering the development of coping mechanisms. Conclusions: The nurses should include the family of the person in critical condition in their care plan as stress and suffering control strategy. An approach based on this scientific evidence should be tested and validated in future studies.
