- BoxIN : the solution for short-term accommodation in airportsPublication . Garcia, José Maria Manoel de Arouca Ramirez; Lino, Rute Sofia Barbosa XavierFor the past years there has been an increasingly trend for long distance travel. Since the world as gotten smaller due to the expansion of air routes, capacity of planes and consequently the price of the trips. In order to achieve that, major airlines adopted a structure where they would have a HUB (headquarters) from where all long distance flights would departure. To make it happen they would have to transport all the passengers from their home airport to that HUB and subsequently travel to another HUB or their final destination. This structure helps airlines to save money, as they can agglomerate as many passengers as can in one single long distance flight even though the passengers don’t come from the same destination. However, there is a downside for the passengers, some of those passengers might have a flight from their home airport to the HUB during hours that are not compatible with the departure of the other flight. Which will make them have long connection hours in the HUB airport. For this exact reason, BoxIn appears as an accommodation solution for those exhausting hours in airports. In this dissertation, it will be presented the structure of the business for the common passenger as well as a solution for airlines to present to their VIP passenger. Furthermore, it will be presented the target HUBS to begin the expansion as well as the target passengers. Finalizing, with the map of costs and the projection of earnings for the next 3 years.
(Marques, 2003, p.ll). Inspirei-me neste assertivo ditame do professor Ramiro Marques porque o considero cabalmente ajustado à minha mundividência.
- Using assistive robots to promote inclusive educationPublication . Encarnação, P.; Leite, T.; Nunes, C.; Ponte, M. Nunes da; Adams, K.; Cook, A.; Caiado, A.; Pereira, J.; Piedade, G.; Ribeiro, M.Purpose: This paper describes the development and test of physical and virtual integrated augmentative manipulation and communication assistive technologies (IAMCATs) that enable children with motor and speech impairments to manipulate educational items by controlling a robot with a gripper, while communicating through a speech generating device. Method: Nine children with disabilities, nine regular and nine special education teachers participated in the study. Teachers adapted academic activities so they could also be performed by the children with disabilities using the IAMCAT. An inductive content analysis of the teachers’ interviews before and after the intervention was performed. Results: Teachers considered the IAMCAT to be a useful resource that can be integrated into the regular class dynamics respecting their curricular planning. It had a positive impact on children with disabilities and on the educational community. However, teachers pointed out the difficulties in managing the class, even with another adult present, due to the extra time required by children with disabilities to complete the activities. Conclusions: The developed assistive technologies enable children with disabilities to participate in academic activities but full inclusion would require another adult in class and strategies to deal with the additional time required by children to complete the activities. Implications for Rehabilitation Integrated augmentative manipulation and communication assistive technologies are useful resources to promote the participation of children with motor and speech impairments in classroom activities. Virtual tools, running on a computer screen, may be easier to use but further research is needed in order to evaluate its effectiveness when compared to physical tools. Full participation of children with motor and speech impairments in academic activities using these technologies requires another adult in class and adequate strategies to manage the extra time the child with disabilities may require to complete the activities.
- Introduction to the Banks of Social Capital, the creation of a new institution or how to release the power of mass collaborationPublication . Thurin, Florent; Neves, João Luís Alves César dasAs the focus on social capital and information technology intensifies in today’s connected world, a deeper understanding of how to harness these two trends is increasingly important. This paper describes how the creation of a new kind of institution could potentially endorse the difficult role of enhancing collaboration between economic agents. Firstly, we will widely describe what a Bank of Social Capital, or BoSC, should look like and the way it operates. Special attention will be further dedicated to its main tool and responsibility: The Virtuous Bond. That is through the fair attribution of this score that the BoSC could exploit that elusive form of capital which is Social Capital. The last part details more pragmatically how exactly this institution would operate and the variables that project holders must fulfil to access the funds. Through this perspective, our study is based on a wide spectrum of fields of research from a collection of interdisciplinary assumptions from Economic behaviour to Technologic and Informatics. It consists mostly of a synthesis work and will try to answer the fundamental question: How can we release the potential of mass collaboration?
- Working time flexibilization and the redistribution of workPublication . Gomes, Joana Adelina Madeira; Soares, Maria da Conceição Monteiro; Marcelo, Gonçalo Nuno Falcão de Bettencourt CoutinhoNowadays, the fast pace of the transformations in the world of labour and the threat of unemployment leads us to assess the need of work redistribution measures, among which is the flexibilization of working hours. In this context, this thesis’ main aim is to investigate whether or not the flexibilization of working time is the best approach towards work redistribution. Adopting a qualitative approach, this study sets out to evaluate different flexibilization policies and to see to what extent, and from which perspective, they can be deemed successful. We present several intakes on the importance of work redistribution and evidence of its role in creating employment and fostering a stable economy when aided by working time flexibilization policies, whilst taking into account the fields of sociology, ethics, economics and management. This analysis looks at the cases of The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden as models of the implementation of such policies and compares them with both Portugal and the OECD, in order to assess their economic performance. We further probe our quest by taking into consideration, other than the economic viability of these measures, the degree to which they can be beneficial to workers themselves in terms of work-life balance. Additionally, we discuss the matter critically and ethically in order to make sure that certain ethical principles such as the freedom of choice and general well-being are compiled when these policies are adopted, as to avoid precariousness and ensure the efficiency of work redistribution. The thesis' comprehensive approach also offers a reflection on the future of work and refers to Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a possible complement to work redistribution measures. It argues that such measures are instrumental for overall economic growth, employment and the prosperity of society, but only if certain criteria are adopted, which the thesis spells out and puts forward.
