- Agrupamentos de escolas e estruturas de orientação educativa : (in)adequação das estruturas de orientação educativa no 1.º ciclo de um agrupamento do distrito de BragaPublication . Cruz, Marina Lobarinhas de Miranda da; Estêvão, Carlos Alberto VilarNeste relatório reflexivo e teoricamente fundamentado, pretende-se fazer uma reflexão global sobre a atividade desenvolvida de forma participativa, desde 2001 até ao presente, na instalação e evolução de um agrupamento de escolas atípico, com uma extensão territorial considerável e com um grande número de estabelecimentos. Além de uma breve história sobre a evolução do conceito de escola Primária/ 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico (CEB) e das formas de gestão, é dada ênfase aos modelos teóricos organizacionais na atual realidade escolar. Os órgãos de gestão, a sua composição, a sua evolução e os respetivos instrumentos de regulamentação burocrática do agrupamento de escolas, também merecem atenção, atendendo a que são basilares numa organização complexa, constituída por vários atores, como é uma organização escolar. A temática em reflexão é alvo de uma análise contextualizada, sendo caraterizado o agrupamento de escolas enquanto organização desde a sua formação até ao presente. O redimensionamento das estruturas de coordenação e de orientação educativa do 1.º CEB numa base territorial e não, somente, no grupo de docência, na sequência de um contrato de autonomia, é a experiência em análise. Na ótica de quem participa num órgão de gestão, são apontadas as debilidades e os aspetos mais críticos, as principais dificuldades sentidas no terreno, assim como a solução mais adequada para a formação das equipas de docentes com o objetivo de melhorar os indicadores de coesão, participação e trabalho cooperativo na vida escolar. Finalmente, são apontadas outras possibilidades, atendendo à reestruturação dos agrupamentos e à evolução do conceito de autonomia.
- Textbook piracy : exploring the decision to pirate or notPublication . Rebelo, Maria Francisca Vieira de Matos Tavares; Reis, CatarinaWhile much has been written about the consequences of the digitization of entertainment media (music, movies, etc.) and the best strategies to cope with copyright infringement, there is still little research on the effect of the digitization of books. This raises the question of how the publishing industry can learn from the experience of the entertainment industry. As tablets and e-readers become more prevalent, increasing the attractiveness of digital copies of textbooks and other materials, the issue of copying will become increasingly salient for academic texts. Demand for academic books differs from that of experience goods such as music, movies, or the wider range of books since the primary consumers, students, see textbooks not as cultural items but as a learning tool. This thesis investigates the key factors in students’ decision to acquire textbooks using panel data from a survey of students at Católica-Lisbon School of Business Economics. We model the decision to buy a textbook first using multinomial logit models in which the students’ choice depends not only on the price and quality of the book but also their valuation of a textbook as a study tool. We then attempt to measure each student’s tendency to pirate and incorporate that estimate into the multinomial model. The decision to pirate or not a given book seems to be based primarily on the perceived usefulness of the book, more strongly than price.

- Determinants of electoral behavior : a study using individual-level dataPublication . Garcia, Joana Maria Trapela Marques; Gouveia, MiguelPrevious research on the impact of reforms to the Portuguese electoral system has assessed mechanical effects assuming that the behavior of individuals would remain the same. We improve on this state of affairs by using a rich dataset to study the impact of district magnitude on three relevant decisions made by individuals: the decision to vote or abstain, the decision to vote sincerely or not and the party choice decision. Then, we use our models to predict the effects of four alternative scenarios: uniform-size circles, a reduction of Members of Parliament to 180, a national circle and single-member circles. Besides making contributions to the understanding of how several individual and contextual-level variables shape the voting behavior of the Portuguese, we make four additional contributions in this study. Firstly, we show that the relationship between district magnitude and the probability of abstention is negative and shows diminishing returns. Secondly, we show that the impact of district magnitude on the probability of voting strategically is strikingly similar to its impact on the probability of abstaining. Thirdly, we show that district magnitude plays an important role in shaping the choice of party by individuals. Finally, by using the models estimated we quantify the impact of different types of redistricting on abstention, sincere voting and party choice.
