- Different personality, different consumption : how conservatives and liberals act upon luxuryPublication . Claro, Pedro Tomás Sousa Furtado Sampaio; Fernandes, DanielAlong time, research has been focused on exploring how thoughts and feelings may be linked to their political ideology. Yet, little research has been made regarding how this political ideology influences consumer behaviour. The present research examines the effect of political ideology on luxury consumption. With a study focused on how conservatives and liberals act upon luxury, we are able to establish that conservatives and liberals do not act the same way, confirming the idea that more conservative individuals are more susceptible to social comparisons and are, therefore, more likely to seek status through consumption products or services that enable them to differentiate themselves from others.

- Consumers' memory in supermarketsPublication . Neto, Patrícia Santos Silva; Fernandes, DanielIn literature it is possible to find several studies of marketing and consumer behavior about factors that influence consumers’ choices in the act of consumption (Harris, 1958; McClure and West, 1969; McEnally and Hawes, 1984; Yalch and Spangenberg, 2000). However, only a few of that literature is related to supermarkets. The aim of this thesis is to extend the literature on consumer’s memory in a supermarket context, providing a better understanding on why consumers continue to not use shopping lists even though the presence of forgetfulness is present. With that purpose, was analyzed how some influential factors act, such as the use of external memory aids, on consumers’ memory performance and memory prediction, while shopping in supermarkets. In order to collect data to determine whether our hypotheses are factual or not, one pre-test and two studies were conducted. Findings confirmed our expected correlations between product’s familiarity (Familiar vs. Unfamiliar) and how easily we remember it (Recall vs. Recognition). The reasons why consumers persist in not using shopping lists were also discovered. These findings contribute with further insights on how consumers’ memory work and what are the factors that influence consumers’ memory in a supermarket experience, with the particular purpose of trying to comprehend why the majority of consumers have already forgotten to buy a planned purchase and still persist in not to use shopping lists.
- Pinto Basto, trying to succeed in the angolan market : a case on internationalization in emerging marketsPublication . Silveira, Rita Vieira Mendes Coelho; Assunção, João Borges de; Marcos, Paulo Alexandre GonçalvesThe logistic industry is an important sector for the well development of a country. Nowadays, due to the crescent globalization, it is getting a preponderant role. The companies operating in the sector are pressured by demanding clients and an increasing flow of goods. It is not only difficult to keep up with the whole scenario of a changing industry but it gets harder when a SME has to internationalize to a strategic and complex country. Pinto Basto (PB) is one example operating in that industry and struggling with all the difficulties that SME have. Moreover, the company decided at some point to expand to Angola, a Portuguese speaking country. This internationalization could seem easy and clean as the cultures are not that different, but along the way, the company dealt with serious difficulties in the market. After all, Angola is an under developed country and there is still a lack of stability for SME´s to prosper. Mr. Carvalho-Neto is called into the company with the objective of turnaround the increasing losses that the Angolan subsidiary was having. The complexities of the market lead the new executive director to make a strategic decision of the way that the company should heading. Integrated logistic services were the answer to some of the problems. He came up with two solutions to enter that new business that they needed to implement in order to integrate the services. The board would surely agree with the most traditional and risk averse, a local partnership. However, Mr. Carvalho- Neto was pushing to a more bolt and risky idea, the creation of a new company. Pinto Basto was depending on the decision and, due to the particularities of African markets, either one could lead to a fatal destiny for the company. This is a case about a SME operating in a very complex African market, were decisions would have a determinant impact in the survival of the company.
- Data quality management : what are the requirements and are companies ready to embrace them?Publication . Birol, Can‐André; Amaral, PauloThis work has the purpose of identifying the main requirements that ISO 8000: Data Quality, related ISO standards and leading literature for implementing a data quality management system prescribe to sustainably improve the level of data quality. The expected outcome is to identify the status quo in terms of data quality in the organizations. It is executed by sending a survey coming from a conducted model to all companies regardless of operating industry or size with the objective to, on the one hand figuring out the actual conducted measurements and on the other hand identifying their attitude towards these activities with regard to data quality. The popularity of ISO 8000: Data Quality is evaluated and its potential for substantially increasing the level of data quality is examined. Emphasis is put on the main requirements roles/responsibilities, management commitment and employee awareness building the cornerstone of this management framework. It turns out that the preparation among companies to embrace these requirements is diverse. While roles and responsibilities are formally defined in many cases but lack sufficient financial backup, management commitment is predominantly perceived as insufficient. Employee awareness in contrary is rated best among the dimensions. Evidently financial institutions have a high focus on data quality, whereas manufacturers are the least concerned. ISO 8000: 8000 can be seen as an opportunity to consistently increase the maturity in the critical data quality dimensions and ultimately increase data quality for a higher profitability.
