- Crowdfunding and religiosity : an understanding of the dynamics of religiosity on social lending in KivaPublication . Pinto, Manuela Vanessa Gonçalves; Villarroel Fernández, Juan AndreiThis dissertation aims to study the discrepancy between academic research and laboratory studies regarding the relationship between the religiosity level of an individual and its engagement with pro-social activities. This study examined the hypothesis that religiosity, spirituality and/or altruistic values would display a pro-social behaviour on on-line micro-lending. A survey of 3928 individuals from the Crowdfunding platform Kiva.org contributed to the understanding of the relationship between religiosity and pro-social behaviour on on-line platforms. Findings in this setting indicate that non-religious individuals display a higher engagement level with online pro-social activities on Kiva than do religious or spiritual individuals. Discussion focused on the discrepancy between in-group and out-group affiliation within religious individuals (different values), as well as feminine and non-feminine targets. This has clear implications for micro-lending platform owners, consumer behaviour, marketing segmentation and targeting of online users.

A orientação metodológica seguida fez a opção pelas abordagens qualitativas, mais concretamente a análise documental. - An exploration of the underlying factors for why only some companies are able to take advantage of Open Innovation : crowdsourcing & co-creationPublication . Waagaard, Ulrik Skadsdammen; Villarroel Fernández, Juan AndreiThis thesis addresses a decade-old concept, which is only recently being consciously acknowledged in business practice, Open Innovation. This work gives special emphasis to the organizational phenomena known as Crowdsourcing and Co-Creation. The use of these open innovation organizational phenomena has exploded over the last years proving the skeptics wrong about it only being a hype and establishing itself as one of the most efficient ways of bringing in and taking advantage of knowledge outside the boundaries of the firm. Plenty has been written about these topics alone, however the review of the literature unveiled that no previous research to this day has empirically inquired directly with top-level executives about when these phenomena are applied and how, when they are not applied and most importantly: why. Despite the fact that Crowdsourcing and Co-Creation has been around for more than 7 years, is widely known and discussed, many companies still do not take advantage of it. Also, no literature appears to exist on the negative effects of using these organizational phenomena, which top-level executives interviewed for this research were keen to understand. So, by interviewing companies from different sectors this thesis aims to add to the literature some of the factors that lie behind the companies decisions to use or not use these organizational phenomena. The research and analysis covered by this work indicates that despite the fact that these organizational phenomena have played a role in some of the biggest innovation success stories in the last decade, the majority of the sample of successful and well-established companies studied in this research simply do not use them. The factors found are either internally focused, like the inability to source challenges due to internal resistance within the firm, or externally focused for example on the view the consumers might have about the company not being able to solve their own problems. Finally, this study informs about the relationships between the factors identified and the environment the company operates in.
- Positive or negative? The impact of anti-takeover legislation on R&D investmentPublication . Santos, Rui Jorge Vaz dos; Conti, RaffaeleAnti-takeover laws are laws designed to protect target companies from hostile activity by making the bidder’s attempt of acquisition more expensive and/or time consuming, as there are three different types anti-takeover laws. The aim of this dissertation is analyzing the impact of different kind of antitakeover laws (fair price laws, control share acquisition laws, and business combination laws) on firm R&D expenditures. In order to do so, this study uses data about U.S. public firms between 1970 and 2011. The empirical findings indicate that fair Price laws increase R&D activities because of the possibility of increasing the expected takeover premium for managers, whereas control share acquisition laws and business combination laws decrease it by reducing the external pressure, which is the biggest incentive for firm managers to remain competitive in the market. Alongside, Business Combination laws seem not to have a significant impact on firm’s R&D expenditures.
