- Le secteur viti-vinicole portugais: quelles perspectives?Publication . Rebelo, JoãoPortugal has been a viniculture-oriented country, occupying the 5th position at the European Union ranking and the 9th at the worldwide ranking. Vineyards extend over the national territory, being cultivated in parcels of small dimensions (1,3 hectares) and having 300 different varieties of grapes, some of which being unique and having great potentialities for the production of differentiated wines. In average, national production and human consumption rate from 7 and 5 hectolitres, respectively. Wine is the most exported agricultural product due to Port wine. This paper provides a global analysis of this sector from an array and cluster point of view. Despite the weaknesses, it seems that there are strategic opportunities for the Portuguese viniculture sector to compete seriously within an open and global economy.
