- Navigating disruption in higher education : performance patterns of European business schools through Covid-19Publication . Swoboda, Lara-Katharina Gabriela; Ilseven, EkinThe COVID-19 pandemic brought unexpected challenges to higher education institutions, particularly business schools. This thesis investigates the impact of the pandemic on European Business School Rankings, exploring the factors that contributed to some institutions outperforming others. The inductive study, based on a quantitative analysis of the Financial Times rankings of these institutions before, during, and after the pandemic, identifies distinct resilience profiles and provides a deeper analysis of the assessment criteria used to form such rankings. The analysis revealed that institutions with diversified program offerings, robust alumni career outcomes, and strong global engagement demonstrated higher resilience. Furthermore, the study also identifies which factors have a more limited impact on the resilience, such as student satisfaction and teaching methods and materials, suggesting that managers of business schools should focus their attention and resources to other assessment criteria for greater resilience. These findings underscore the importance of strategic diversification, alumni career support, and international collaboration in fostering resilience. The thesis contributes to the literature on organizational resilience by linking diversification strategies and global networks to performance during crises. It not only provides actionable insights for educational practitioners but also enhances our understanding of how external shocks, like pandemics, shape institutional performance and strategy.
