- The impact of perceived risk on customer trust with contactless payment technologiesPublication . Pauseiro, Miguel de Carvalho; Silva, Susana Cristina Lima da Costa eContactless payment technologies have gained popularity in retail due to their efficiency, speed, and convenience, with the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating adoption as consumers sought hygienic payment options. However, concerns over data security and privacy remain barriers to widespread use. This study examines the impact of perceived risk on consumer trust and adoption of contactless payments, using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The research employs a quantitative approach, gathering data from 259 respondents via an online survey, of whom 239 are active contactless payment users. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) tests hypotheses regarding security, privacy, risk perception, trust, and adoption. Results show that consumer trust is significantly influenced by perceived security and privacy, while perceived risk negatively affects trust. Perceived usefulness and ease of use also play critical roles in adoption behavior, while social influence has a limited impact on decisions. The findings emphasize the need for improved security, transparent data protection policies, and user education to mitigate perceived risks and build trust. This study contributes to literature by extending TAM and UTAUT to incorporate perceived risk and trust as key factors in contactless payment adoption. Practically, businesses and financial institutions can use these insights to create strategies that enhance secure, seamless digital payment integration.
