- Child’s food consumption and physical exercise: results from a Portuguese descriptive studyPublication . Marques, Goreti; Festas, Constança; Fernandes, Carla Sílvia; Simões, Daniela; Ferreira, Fátima; Pinto, Sara; Jorge, Áurea; Ferreira, GustavoAims: To describe food consumption in Portuguese primary school children, to analyze the influence of food consumption on the body mass index (BMI), and to analyze the relationship between physical exercise and the child's food consumption. Method: A quantitative, descriptive, exploratory, and cross-sectional study was conducted in 2 primary schools of the north of Portugal (n = 109 child). The use of a food register for 5 consecutive days and anthropometric evaluation of the children were used. Results: The vast majority of children had a normal weight (65.10%). However, 34.90% of the children presented significant changes in their BMI (14.70% with low weight, 11.90% overweight, and 8.30% with obesity). Children who engage in physical activity drink more water and consume less sugary products. However, they also consume less meat, fish, and eggs than those who do not perform regular physical activity. Conclusions: The study highlights the emergence of new problems, such as the increasing prevalence of underweight children. The prevention of these problems, overweight, or underweight children, should be addressed among healthcare providers, local authorities, families, and teachers.
- Childhood obesity and reduction of hours of sleep: results from cross-sectional studyPublication . Marques, Goreti; Matos, Maria; Afonso, Claúdia; Conceição, Ana Paula da; Martins, Tânia; Pinto, Sara; Festas, Constança; Pinheiro, Ana RitaChildhood obesity is a prevalent condition in modern societies which can negatively impact people’s health during life. Although there are several factors contributing to obesity, sleep duration has been pointed out as an important risk factor. This study, held in the district of Porto, Portugal, aimed to analyze the association between sleep duration and the nutritional status of school-aged children studying in Portugal. 1396 students from 35 and 3 public and private schools, respectively, were contacted, of which 829 participated in this study (9.2±0.38 years old; 50.3% male; 49.7% female). Age, sex, sleep duration, height, weight and body composition were registered trough a questionnaire. According to the obtained z-score for Body Mass Index (BMI), 22.9% of the children were overweight and 15.2% were obese. The mean of sleep duration was 9.7±1.08 hours and z-score for BMI was 0.78±1.21, demonstrating a statistically significant (p<0.01) weak negative correlation (r=-0.15) between sleep duration and z-score of BMI. Results were also stratified and analyzed by sex, and the same finding was observed. Therefore, the results suggest a negative association between sleep duration and overweight/obesity in these children. Although more studies are necessary, this finding highlights the need of a global approach which includes sleep assessment and counselling when promoting an appropriate nutritional status.
- Core components of rehabilitating children with brain cancer using exergames: a scoping reviewPublication . Ribeiro, Catarina Dias; Barbosa, Pedro José; Marques, Goreti; Almeida, Sofia; Padilha, José MiguelIntroduction: Child cancer is a rare phenomenon carrying alterations in physical condition, that influence the way they develop. Due to the implications resulting from brain tumors it is necessary to define, implement and evaluate interventions that minimize the functional impact on the child, speci-fically those that utilize exergames. So, the aim of this study is to map the literature related to the use of exergames in the motor rehabilitation of school--aged children with brain tumors. Methodology: Scoping Review method, according to Joanna Briggs Institute. Two independent re-viewers carried out the review which included studies incorporating school-aged children with a brain tumor, who resorted to exergames in motor rehabilitation programs. Research was carried out without a time limit, accessing to EBSCOHost, Web of Science, Scopus, and grey literature. Results: Three publications were included. The intervention varied between 8 to 12 weeks including 3 to 5 sessions per week, with an estimated time of 30 to 45 minutes per session. The most used gaming platform was Nintendo® Wii. Several evaluation tools have been applied, to obtain data about physical fitness, functionality, quality of life, neuropsy-chological state, and self-concept. Discussion: Intervention programs differ one from another, particularly in the criteria for their pres-cription, duration, and assessment tools, as well as the game platforms used. The programs are evalua-ted at an early stage and at the end and can be ex-tended up to 3 months after the end of the program. Conclusion: Further investigation should be carried to examine the characteristics of interventions aimed at children with cancer, namely the frequen-cy, intensity, type, and duration of physical exercise, as well as the influence of exergames on the rehabilitation of children with brain tumors. The scarcity of research on this topic justifies investing in primary studies to clarify the impact of the intervention of specialist nurses in Rehabilitation Nursing in this field. The analysis of interventions that can be implemented by specialist nurses for children with cancer is an emerging issue, to promote infor-med decision-making in Rehabilitation Nursing, as well as to identify priority areas for research.
- COVID-19 pandemic and its psychological impact among healthy Portuguese and Spanish nursing studentsPublication . Laranjeira, Carlos; Querido, Ana; Marques, Goreti; Silva, Mafalda; Simões, Daniela; Gonçalves, Luísa; Figueiredo, RitaFew studies have explored the impacts of COVID-19 and lockdown on the mental health of undergraduate nursing students. This study aimed: a) to explore perceived stress among undergraduate nursing students in Portugal and Spain during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak; and b) to analyze several COVID-19 related factors and psychological issues that may be associated with perceived stress. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of Portuguese and Spanish undergraduate nursing students (n=1075). The data gathered included demographic information, questions about COVID-19 related factors, and psychological issues. Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression with a degree of significance at p<0.05. High perceived stress scores were found in 558 participants (51.9%). Students with high perceived stress most likely had a COVID-19 diagnosis in their household; their household income had been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; experienced difficulty falling asleep or sleeping all night; consumed junk food in excess; neglected their appearance; felt headaches, stomach aches, and back pain; and lacked the patience or desire to exercise. Additionally, high perceived stress was negatively associated with life satisfaction. The results provide evidence that infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, may significantly influence mental health. Further research should explore the long-term psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic among nursing students.
- Integrative review on dietary assessment instruments in school-age childrenPublication . Fernandes, Carla Sílvia; Marques, Goreti; Ferreira, Fátima; Festas, Constança; Silva, CristianeInformation on a population’s dietary intake enables the identification of individuals who are at nutritional risk. The objective of the present study was to identify and analyze existing dietary assessment instruments in school-age children. An integrative review was carried out from 2010 to 2016. For analysis, nine articles were selected according to established inclusion criteria. These enabled the organization of the results into two thematic areas: dietary assessment instruments and limitations in the use of instruments. The most used instrument was the 24-hour dietary recall. The results showed the need for more comprehensive instruments in order to deal with limitations of current instruments in use.
- Predictive model of the psychological well-being of nursing students during the COVID-19 lockdownPublication . Lourenço, Tânia Marlene Gonçalves; Reis, Ana Catarina Rodrigues da Silva; Alvarez, Enrique Jesús Sáez; Abreu-Figueiredo, Rita Maria Sousa; Charepe, Zaida Borges; Marques, Goreti; Gonçalves, Maria Luísa Vieira FrancoIntroduction: Lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic radically changed nursing education. Along with social isolation, the transition to distance education affected the well-being of students in several countries, particularly Portugal and Spain. Objectives: To identify which variables are predictors of psychological well-being for Portuguese and Spanish nursing students during mandatory lockdowns. Methods: A multicenter, cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study involving a sample of 1075 students (944 women, mean age 22.46 + /−4.95 years). Data were collected from an online questionnaire which applied the following scales: Perceived Stress Scale (α =.820); Brief COPE-14 Subscales (α =.430 < 0.930); Well-being Manifestations Measure Scale (α =.940); Herth Hope Index (α =.850). A multiple regression model was created to predict the psychological well-being of nursing students. Results: The following predictor variables were identified in the model of the psychological well-being of students during the COVID-19 pandemic: perceived stress (β =.405; p ≤.001); hope (β =.404; p ≤.001); and the mechanisms of active coping (β =.405; p ≤.001), planning (β =.097; p ≤.001), and positive reinterpretation (β =.053; p =.12). These five variables predicted 62.0% of the nursing students’ psychological well-being (R2 =.620; F = 350.82; p ≤.001). Conclusion: Promoting students’ mental health is essential, especially in periods of great adversity, such as a pandemic. Our results lead the way for the design and validation of an intervention program that addresses the five variables identified as predictors of students’ psychological well-being.

- The impact of cancer on healthy siblingsPublication . Marques, Goreti; Araujo, Beatriz; Sá, LuísOBJECTIVE: The objective is to identify the variables that influence the impact of cancer on healthy siblings. METHOD: This is a quantitative, descriptive and correlational study with 83 families of children with cancer. We used the "Questionnaire to Assess the Impact of the Children's Cancer on the Family", "Social Support Satisfaction Scale", "Graffar Scale" and "Apgar Scale". RESULTS: The results show a relation between social support (X²=5.031, gl=1, p=0.025), expenses (t=-2.009, gl=81, p=0.048), disease impact on family structure (t=-3.210, gl=81, p=0.002) and the impact of the disease on healthy siblings. CONCLUSION: Social support plays an important role in these families, especially in the impact of the disease on healthy siblings. Nurses should identify the support systems that families have available, as well as their family functionality and the implications for healthy siblings.
