- Composing for DMIs: entoa, music for intonaspacioPublication . Mamedes, Clayton Rosa; Rodrigues, Mailis G.; Wanderley, Marcelo M.; Manzolli, Jônatas; Garcia, Denise H.L.; Ferreira-Lopes, PauloDigital Musical Instruments (DMIs) have difficulties establishing themselves after their creation. A huge number of DMIs is presented every year and few of them actually remain in use. Several causes could explain this reality, among them the lack of a proper instrumental technique, inadequacy of the traditional musical notation and the nonexistence of a repertoire dedicated to the instrument. In this paper we present the case study of Entoa, the first written music for Intonaspacio, a DMI we designed in our research project. We propose a process of composition that considers the design of the instrument as a required step in order to start defining an instrumental technique. We present an overview of the instrument and strategies for mapping data from sensors to sound processing, in order to accomplish an expressive performance.

- Generative face from random data, on 'how computers imagine humans'Publication . Moura, João Martinho; Ferreira-Lopes, PauloIn the recent years, face detection technologies have been widely used by artists to create digital art. Face detection provides new forms of interaction, and allows digital artefacts to detect the presence of human beings, through video capture and facial detection, in real-time. In this paper we explore the algorithm proposed by Paul Viola and Michael Jones, presented in 2001, in order to generate imagined faces from visual randomness.
- George Perle’s twelve-tone tonality: some developments for CAC using PWGLPublication . Marques, Telmo; Ferreira-Lopes, PauloThis paper presents a description and some developments on Perle’s theory and compositional system known as Twelve-Tone Tonality, a system that, because of its characteristics and fundamentals, is currently associated with Schoenberg dodecaphonic system. Some research has been made in the last few decades in order to develop his model in a Computer Assisted Composition (CAC) environment. After some efforts in order to analyse these prototypes, we realize that in general they were discontinued or outdated. A three-scope proposal is so outlined: Firstly, to simplify the grasp of a system that presents an easily understandable starting premise but afterwards enters a world of unending lists and arrays of letters and numbers; Secondly, to present the implementation process already started using PWGL [1] (see Laurson, 1996; Laurson, 2003; Laurson, 2009). Finally, the model is applied in a short original compositional work, and it is presented and analysed emphasizing the standpoints properties of the system. Some further considerations were made regarding the continuity of this project where the construction of a dedicated PWGL library of Perle’s model reveals a pre-compositional necessary tool. PWGL software was selected due to its specific fitting features: it is based on Common Lisp - perfectly powerful and suitable to process lists of integers — and it is specialized in CAC.
- HASGS: Hybrid augmented system of Gestural Symbiosis Generating Visual InformationPublication . Portovedo Marques, Henrique; Ferreira-Lopes, PauloThis paper discusses how an augmented instrument, HASGS in the context of interactive electronic music, motivates the generation of different graphical user interfaces taking in consideration the repertoire being composed for it. New composition aesthetics are deeply influenced by electronic materials and sonic repositories at the same time as new mediums are currently seen as possible extensions of instrumental practice. These mediums are available for creative purposes during composition and performative processes. While the aesthetics of acoustic and electronic sounds are creating mutual influences, composers and sound designers are developing new languages, new gestural attitudes, new extended techniques, new notation methods, new performative paradigms including the creation of graphical interfaces for visual feedback. This augmented system for saxophone was motivated by the need to perform pieces with a common aesthetic that have been written using electronic environments. Those pieces shared the need for the control of external devices in order to be performed. The repertoire for saxophone and electronics is growing in a huge scale, from pieces using stomp boxes or control pedals for different triggering or fading, to pieces requiring the manipulation of knobs. These controllers, by their nature, devices that separate sound production (synthesis) and performer gesture (control), have subsequently generated an increased interest in the study of compositional mapping strategies for computer music. From our experience, we conclude that the graphical user interface (GUI) is fundamental for the understanding of the individuality of each piece, as well as to understand the relation between the augmentation system and the piece itself. If this project started with the idea of contributing to a new performative paradigm regarding the existing repertoire, new repertoire and improvisational performance situations led to the development of a hybrid system contributing to bio-feedback incorporation in the work of art, while creating new graphical user interfaces for visual feedback.
