O sagrado é interdito, pelo que a sua exposição no espaço profano do museu parece ser contraditória. O cristianismo, porém, estabelece uma relação inédita no âmbito das religiões, ao restringir a interdição de forma que os objectos do culto, quando desafectos, se tornem execrados e possam assumir uma função museológica. A história da museologia portuguesa faz-se, em grande parte, a partir de iniciativas eclesiásticas e com recurso a objectos de arte sacra. Contudo, nos primeiros museus, o objecto de religião era apresentado como objecto de arte. Só mais tarde os museólogos tomaram consciência da importância de apresentar dados relativos à função, ao significado e ao símbolo. Neste sentido, a museografia actual procura estratégias que realcem o conteúdo sagrado do património religioso.

Christianity, however, creates a precedent in the context of religions, to restrict the interdiction, allowing the sacred objects, when disaffected, to be transferred to museological functions. The history of Portuguese museology is made up largely of ecclesiastical initiatives and incorporating sacred art objects. However, in the first museums, religious objects were approached as art objects. Only later did museums become aware of the importance of data such as function, meaning and symbol. Correspondingly, contemporary museography designs strategies that enhance the content of the sacred in religious heritage.
