Abstract(s)
O padre António Vieira colocou um problema ao nosso pensamento liberal, pois que sendo jesuíta se opôs à Inquisição, duas instituições que eram geralmente associadas na lenda negra do Antigo Regime. Procura-se aqui formar um juízo mais objectivo da relação entre política, religião e direitos humanos em Vieira, comparando as suas posições relativamente à legitimidade do poder, à tolerância e à escravatura com as de dois autores seus contemporâneos: John Locke e Pierre Bayle. Numa época de transição detectar-se-ão nos três autores posições que nos parecem, hoje, contraditórias; constatar-se-á o papel que nos três a fé cristã teve na emergência destes temas, e que partilham um ponto central para o surgimento da concepção de direitos humanos: a noção da unidade fundamental da humanidade.

His attacks on the Inquisition led some portuguese liberal intelectuals of the XIXth and XXth century to see in him an ilustrious forbearer, a human rights pioneer, while others saw him as yet «too» religious and jesuit. The author seek to compare his views in such matters as the legitimacy of power, religious tolerance, and slavery to those of Pierre Bayle and John Locke. In a century of transition, each of the above mentioned authors take positions in these matters that seem contradictory to us. What they all undoubtably claim is a deep christian faith and support a notion essential to human rights history: the fundamental unity of humankind.
