Abstract(s)
O artigo procura analisar as consequências de algumas atitudes da Inquisição de Évora lesivas da integridade da Companhia de Jesus: a detenção do padre Francisco Pinheiro, professor da Universidade de Évora, em Janeiro de 1643, antecedida pela prisão de Roque Cortez, almotacé da dita Universidade, em Dezembro de 1642.
O conflito originado por esta situação é revelador de determinadas características da sociedade portuguesa nos anos que imediatamente se seguem à Restauração de 1640. Em primeiro lugar, permite compreender o conceito de Inquisição existente no interior da Companhia de Jesus. Por outro lado, a contenda demonstra qual o estilo de actuação do Tribunal do Santo Ofício no seio da sociedade portuguesa. Finalmente, o modo como D. João IV soluciona a questão, é esclarecedor da relação de poder que, em 1643, existe entre a Coroa e a Inquisição.
The article tries to analyse the consequences of some atitudes of the Évora Inquisition damaging the integrity of the Society of Jesus: the arrest of Father Francisco Pinheiro, professor in the Évora University, in January 1643, preceded by the arrest of Roque-Cortez, almotacé (price-fixer) of the University, in December 1642. The conflit generated by this situation is revealing of certain features of the portuguese society in the years immediately following the Restauration of 1640. First of all, it allows to understand the concept of Inquisition existing inside de Society of Jesus. On the other side, the dispute demonstrates the syle of action of the Inquisition among the portuguese society. Finally, the way which D. João IV solves the question, is elucidative of the power connection between the Crown and the Inquisition in 1643.
