Abstract(s)
Research on Luther (Lutherforschung) has searched for a hermeneutical key to the complexity of his biography and, especially, his theology. Given the attention it merited, the Lutheran doctrine of justification was commonly assumed to be the foundation on which his thought and legacy were structured. However, recent research, especially W. von Löwenich’s study Luther’s Theologia Crucis (1929), has revealed that the key to the great German reformer’s theology is in staurology. In a theological introduction, I will present the “theology of the cross” as a key to the interpretation of Luther’s thought, seeking to: 1. contextualize the theological emphasis in Christian discourse (Roots); 2. show that the logic of the cross underlies the great themes of his thought and work (Hermeneutical Key); and 3. indicate how this perspective has been perpetuated in theological discourse up to the present day (Posterity).
