The usefulness of aggressive retrenchment for firms in decline

| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation tests the effect of retrenchment aggressiveness, which involves volume and time aggressiveness, on turnaround performance. Using three theoretical perspectives: the survivor syndrome perspective, the downward spiral view, and the threat rigidity perspective, a direct effect between time aggressiveness and volume aggressiveness on turnaround performance is hypothesised. Time aggressiveness is divided into two dimensions: how early retrenchment measures are initiated (timing) and how fast they are completed (speed). Simultaneously, a moderating effect of time aggressiveness on the relationship between volume aggressiveness and turnaround performance is studied. The data basis of this study is declining firms from the services industry in Northern America retrieved from the Compustat North America database in the time frame of 1990-2018. Using a matched-pair sampling technique, 85 firms with a successful turnaround were equally matched with an unsuccessful counterpart resulting in a final sample size of 170. The results point towards two significant findings. First, a volume-aggressive retrenchment strategy is only successful when focusing on the cost-side of the business, specifically on Selling, General and Administrative (SGA) costs. Second, the results indicate that turnaround performance is solely positively affected by the speed of retrenchment and not by its timing. This dissertation contributes to the novel literature combining the two research streams on aggressiveness and corporate turnaround. | dc.description.abstract | Esta dissertação testa o efeito da agressividade de retrenchment, que envolve a agressividade de volume e tempo, sobre o desempenho em reestruturação. Usando três perspetivas teóricas: o síndrome de sobrevivência, a espiral descendente e a rigidez da ameaça, é colocada a hipótese de um efeito direto entre a agressividade temporal e a do volume sobre o desempenho em reestruturação. A agressividade temporal divide-se em duas dimensões: como são iniciadas as medidas de redução precoce (timing) e quão rapidamente são completadas (velocidade). Simultaneamente, é estudado um efeito moderador da agressividade do tempo na relação entre a agressividade do volume e o desempenho em recuperação. A base de dados deste estudo são empresas em declínio da indústria de serviços na América do Norte retiradas da base de dados Compustat North America no período de 1990-2018. Utilizando uma técnica de amostragem de matched-pairs, 85 empresas com uma rotação bem sucedida foram igualmente comparadas com uma contraparte sem sucesso, resultando numa amostra final de 170. Os resultados apontam para duas resultados significativos. Primeiro, uma estratégia de redução progressiva do volume só é bem sucedida quando se concentra no lado do custo do negócio, especificamente na SGA. Em segundo lugar, os resultados indicam que o desempenho de recuperação só é positivamente afetado pela velocidade de recuperação e não pelo seu timing. Esta dissertação contribui para a nova literatura que combina as duas correntes de investigação sobre agressividade e reviravolta empresarial.
