| dc.description.abstract | Published in 1555, Aires Vitoria's Tragedia del Rei Agamenom is the only translation of a Greek tragedy produced in Portugal during the 16th century. The strong resemblance to Perez de Oliva's Spanish version La venganza de Agamenon reveals that Vitoria did not render it from the original; his version is instead a moralised adaptation of Sophocles' Electra. The analysis of both Aires Vitoria's and Perez de Oliva's translations highlights the main differences between the two works and discloses the singularity of Aires Vitoria's version, anchored in a deep understanding of classical texts as vehicles of Christian morality. | pt_PT |
