This dissertation examines the strategic growth and digital transformation process of a Portuguese family-owned SME, focusing on the case of Alumitérmica and Maxlac — two sister companies integrated within the aluminium value chain, respectively dedicated to the development of window and door systems and the certified powder coating of aluminium profiles. The research is structured around three strategic pillars: (i) geographic expansion within the national territory, including a comparative analysis between organic growth and asset acquisition; (ii) technical diversification of the product offering, assessing the feasibility of introducing anodizing processes and the impact of PVC window systems on the company’s differentiation strategy; and (iii) organizational restructuring through the digitalization and automation of processes, aligned with the principles of Industry 4.0. Based on an in-depth case study and a market investigation supported by survey data, the research identifies internal barriers to growth, critical success factors for expansion, and the company’s level of digital maturity. The findings led to the formulation of strategic recommendations focused on investment prioritization, market targeting, and organizational optimization. This dissertation thus contributes to the understanding of the challenges faced by industrial family SMEs in pursuing sustainable growth, offering a research-based roadmap for competitive consolidation.
