| dc.description.abstract | O assunto central do Fausto de Pessoa, aquilo que parece originar as maiores angústias no protagonista desse drama inacabado, é a existência, o simples facto de haver alguma coisa, de haver um universo passível de ser percepcionado e a cuja percepção estamos condenados. É acerca desse Mistério fundamental que Fausto amiúde se interroga e é dele que derivam todos os outros mistérios, igualmente angustiantes e incómodos: da evidência incontornável de que há alguma coisa para lá da coisa que ele próprio é decorre que haja também a coisa que a tenha causado (Deus), a coisa que a nega (Morte) e a coisa contra a qual a exterioridade dela se estabelece (Eu). Significa isto que, ao contrário do que muitas vezes se sugere, não é na severidade do mundo interior de Fausto que reside a origem dos seus males. Aquilo que o define, e que a montante o proscreve, é a própria faculdade perceptiva. Ainda que se emaranhe em reflexões intermináveis e constantemente ceda à tentação da metafísica, é no momento de abrir os olhos e de dar de caras com a existênciado mundo exterior que tudo principia. Nesse aspecto particular, Fausto não é diferente de Caeiro. O principal intuito deste artigo é o de mostrar em que medida isso é possível. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | The main topic of Pessoa’s Faust, what seems to make its central character ache with anxiety, is Existence, the brute fact that there is something, that there is a universe outside ready for us to perceive it and to whose perception we are doomed. It is on that fundamental mystery that Faust often questions himself and it is from that mystery that all the other equally abhorring mysteries originate. This is the unavoidable suggestion that there is something beyond the thing he is, that an outward universe exists, implying that there is also the thing which causes it (God), the thing which denies it (Death) and the thing against which its exteriority is established (Self). Thus, contrary to what is often suggested, it is not in Faust’s severe inner world that the origin of his troubles resides. Rather, what defines Faust, and what later on would proscribe him, is the faculty of perception itself. Although he gets himself entangled in endless thoughts and constantly engages himself in metaphysical speculation, it is when he opens his eyes and comes face to face with the outer world that the inner motion of his thoughts begins. In this particular aspect, Faust is no different from Caeiro. The main purpose of this essay is to show to what extent this is possible. | pt_PT |
