| dc.description.abstract | Composting is a growing practice in both organic and conventional farming systems. Prepared from organic waste that would otherwise be unusable, this technique promotes the reuse of these by-products as effective soil amendments. While its efficiency varies according to the raw materials used and composting conditions, this practice has become widespread in urban farming due to its low cost and accessibility. However, the microbiological quality of composts produced in urban farms remains poorly characterized, particularly regarding the presence of hygiene indicators and foodborne pathogens. As compost is frequently applied directly to crops, insufficiently stabilized or contaminated compost may represent a relevant route of microbial contamination in urban farming systems. In this work, mature composts were collected from 10 urban farms in Porto, Portugal, and their microbiological quality was evaluated. | eng |
