Separation or integration? : strategies to deal with dual business models for the Iberian Banking Sector, as a consequence of the digital transformation process

| dc.description.abstract | Currently, industries are facing the impact of the digital transformation phenomenon. This phenomenon is transforming the way organizations create, deliver and capture value, pushing firms to adopt innovative business models. Although the change is happening increasingly faster, it requires firms to sustain their traditional business models while building the novel business model crafted to the new circumstances, entering as a result in a dual business model system. The present master thesis focuses on the Iberian banking industry, to attain the objective of assessing if any of the identified strategies by the literature to deal with the business model duality - separation or integration strategy - is better to address this challenge than its counterpart. The main findings reveal that a separation strategy was the best strategy for the group of Iberian banks implementing it, across the period of 2004 to 2017, suggesting that this strategy is the best one to address the duality within this industry. This conclusion contributes to the existing literature through the provision of a concrete example of an industry where a specific strategy has produced better outcomes for the group of firms using it, extending the understanding of how to better manage two business models simultaneously. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Atualmente, diversas indústrias estão a enfrentar os impactos causados pelo fenómeno da transformação digital. Este fenómeno está a transformar a forma como as empresas criam, entregam, e capturam valor, obrigando-as a adotar modelos de negócio inovadores como resposta. Apesar do ritmo da mudança estar constantemente a aumentar, as empresas continuam a necessitar de manter os seus modelos de negócio tradicionais enquanto constroem o novo modelo já concebido para fazer face às novas circunstâncias, acabando por entrar numa situação de modelos de negócio duais. A presente tese de mestrado foca-se no sector bancário Ibérico, tendo como objetivo avaliar se algumas das estratégias identificadas pela literatura – estratégia de separação ou integração - é melhor que a outra para melhor gerir dois modelos de negócio em simultâneo. Os resultados revelam que uma estratégia de separação foi a mais bem-sucedida para o grupo de bancos que a implementaram durante o período de 2004 a 2017, o que sugere que esta estratégia é a melhor para lidar com a dualidade, pelo menos para o sector bancário. A conclusão chegada contribui para a literatura existente ao providenciar um exemplo concreto de uma indústria onde uma estratégia em específico produziu melhores resultados para o grupo de organizações que a usaram, estendendo a compreensão de como melhor gerir dois modelos de negócio em simultâneo. | pt_PT |
