Abstract(s)
Successful aging requires an active attitude, by the individual, as he grows older. As that happens, the individual uses mechanisms of selection, optimization and compensation that allow him to control his own life through a self-regulation process. A relevant aspect of the creation of possible selves is how individuals perceive ageing process and what are they willing to do to shape their own development. The aim of this study is to understand the expectations of a group of Portuguese people, from 60 to 65years old, concerning their own ageing process. Results show that although individuals consider they will be an example of successful ageing in the future, they are concerned with their future condition, particularly with the loss of autonomy and economic situation.
