A obra de Eugénio de Andrade (1923-2005) é rica em alusões a diversas árvores, frutos, flores, e folhas de erva. Neste artigo, examino esta curiosa recorrência na poesia eugeniana, realçando: a) o significado simbólico e a ressonância mítica de certas plantas; b) a associação destes vegetais às idades do ser humano; c) a ligação intertextual com plantas mencionadas em obras de outros autores. O meu objectivo é provar que os elementos vegetais na obra do escritor português não só reflectem uma paixão telúrica, como também apresentam um significado endoliterário e exoliterário, e cultural.
The poetry of Eugénio de Andrade (1923-2005) is rich in references to certain trees, fruits, flowers, and leaves of grass. In this article, I examine these interesting recurrent elements in Eugenian poetry, emphasizing: a) the symbolic meaning and mythic resonance of several plants; b) the association of these to the ages of the human being; c) the intertextual connection with plants mentioned in books written by other authors. My main objective is to prove that the vegetal elements in the work of the Portuguese writer not only reflect a passion towards nature, but also present an endoliterary, exoliterary and cultural significance.
