A história do Mercator de Plauto assenta na rivalidade entre pai (Demifão) e filho (Carino) na luta pela jovem cortesã Pasicompsa. Neste estudo, procuramos mostrar que o tema da rivalidade amorosa pai/filho, não sendo novo, é abordado, no Mercator, de modo diferente do habitual. A abordagem é menos hilariante e burlesca do que, por exemplo, na Asinaria e na Casina, e adquire mesmo, na parte final da peça, um tom de certo modo sério e reflexivo.
The story of Plautus’ Mercator is centred on the fierce competition between father (Demipho) and son (Charinus) for young courtesan Pasicompsa. In this study we attempt to show that the theme of love rivalry, though not original, is dealt with in Mercator under a new light. The approach is less hilarious and burlesque if one compares it to Asinaria and Casina, for instance, and it even discloses a serious and reflexive tone by the end of the play.
