Em 1934, Teixeira de Pascoaes (1877-1952) deu à luz uma biografia de S. Paulo, que teve larga difusão. Nela faz uma interpretação da figura e da obra do Apóstolo
como verdadeiro fundador do cristianismo. Este, porém, é por ele interpretado em chave gnóstica, no interior e em dependência da sua poética filosofia da saudade: o
Cristo do verdadeiro cristianismo vive (apenas) como personificação mítica do sentimento da queda de Deus no mundo material, em sua reacção positiva de elevação espiritualista ou de esperança. E esta é a via da redenção ou salvação, enquanto que por ela se dá a reintegração do homem e do mundo no divino originário de ambos. Paulo foi aquele que primeiro compreendeu Cristo deste modo e o transformou em objecto de crença para o mundo.

In it he creates an interpretation of the figure and work of the Apostle as the true founder of Christianity. This, however, is interpreted by him in a gnostic key, within and dependent on his poetic philosophy of nostalgia: the Christ of true Christianity lives (only) as a mythical personification of the sentiment of the fall of God to the material world, in his positive reaction of spriritualist elevation or of hope. And this is the means to redemption or salvation, while through it is brought about the reintegration of mankind and the world in what was originally divine in both.Paul was the one who first understood Christ in this manner and transformed him into an object of belief for the world.
