As duas cartas latinas cujo original aqui se publica pela primeira vez resultam de um trabalho sistemático de recolha dos manuscritos autógrafos e apógrafos do Padre António Vieira no âmbito da edição da sua Obra Completa em 30 Volumes, de que constam tão só na respectiva versão vernácula. Pertencem a um conjunto particularmente interessante de treze cartas conservadas no Archivium Romanum Societatis Iesu, que, embora do conhecimento dos historiadores, não haviam ainda conseguido específica atenção. Enviadas a 22 de Julho de 1688 e 14 de Julho de 1691 ao Prepósito Geral da Companhia de Jesus em Roma, Padre Tirso González, abordam os assuntos reflectidos no subtítulo proposto, que remete para dinâmicas relacionais dos jesuítas para com índios e colonos, por um lado, e dos jesuítas entre si, por outro. A primeira está voltada para o exterior, para aspetos práticos da organização das missões e da política e economia locais. A segunda permite-nos identificar na vida interna da Ordem os reflexos das mesmas fracturas que atravessavam a sociedade dos “naturais da terra” (aqui indignenae) e as tensões entre estes e os “portugueses”.
The two letters whose original Latin text is published here for the first time are the result of a systematic research on the autograph and apograph manuscripts of Father António Vieira, within the context of the edition of his Complete Works in 30 volumes, of which they can be found only in its vernacular version. They belong to an interesting corpus of 13 letters kept at the Archivium Romanum Societatis Jesus, which, even though known to historians, have not yet obtained specific attention. They were both sent on July 22, 1688, and July 14, 1691, to the Praepositus Generalis, in Rome, Father Tirso González, and address the issues reflected on our title, pointing to the attitudes of the Jesuits towards indians and settlers and to those among the jesuits themselves. They allow us to identify in the internal life of the Order the reflexes of the same fractures that crossed the society of those born in Brasil, the so called indigenae or “naturais da terra”, and the “Portuguese”.
