Abstract(s)
This study focuses on the work of one of the main Portuguese painters from the 16th century, Vasco Fernandes also known as Grão Vasco, active between 1500-1540, approximately.
The research aims to complement the current information, by identifying the material and technical history of some of the most significant masterpiece of this painter but also of the Portuguese primitive painting universe: S. Peter’s production, belonging to Viseu’s catedral (1530-1535) on Grão Vasco’s Museum. The goal is to achieve relevant data for consideration of authorship, artistic production, influences and geographic flow.
The current work involves the crossing of two PhD investigations, which allowed us to achieve a new set of data provided by a wide broad spectrum of scientifical resources, with non-destructive examination (namely photography, infrared reflectography, and radiography) to different techniques of microsampling chemical analysis (optical microscopy, SEM-EDS, μ-FTIR and HPLC), concerning all the paintings layers: since the wooden panel support to the chromatic composition.
This latest material approach to the S. Peter’s panel in partnership, provided us a new valuable set of results and conclusions that will contribute, significantly, to the knowledge of Portuguese Art from the age of discoveries.
