How online banking will shape the future of the german banking branch infrastructure

| dc.description.abstract | Over the past 10 years, the increasing degree of digitization has been a major driver for a far-reaching wave of closures within the German bank branch network. The emergence of online banks represented an innovative business model to benefit from these developments. Traditional banks reacted to this by improving their own online platforms. Today online banks and online banking have become an important part of the German banking system. The influence of this dynamic is also reflected in customer demand. The traditional bank branch as a one-stop-shop seems antiquated, visitor frequency is declining, and more and more customers are demanding the ability to carry out their banking transactions at any time and in any place via various digital channels. The present study attempts to provide an answer to the question of how online banking will affect the German branch network in the future. To this end, an evaluation of historical data on the number of branches was combined with a trend analysis based on various surveys and studies. To provide a reliable forecast of the future development of the branch network, a market model was developed with the support of experts. The results show that a halving of the branch network can be expected by 2030. A subsequent scenario analysis has shown that the business model of the individual branches will also change. Advisory centers and small so-called lifestyle locations are expected to replace the traditional business model in the long term. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Nos últimos 10 anos, a digitalização tem sido um dos motores de encerramento da rede de sucursais bancárias alemãs. O aparecimento de bancos online representou um modelo de negócios inovador para beneficiar destes desenvolvimentos. Os bancos tradicionais reagiram a este aparecimento investindo nas suas próprias plataformas online. Hoje em dia, os bancos e a banca online tornaram se uma parte importante do sistema bancário alemão. A influência desta dinâmica reflecte-se também na procura por parte dos clientes. A agência bancária tradicional como balcão único parece antiquada, a frequência de visitantes está a diminuir, e cada vez mais clientes exigem a capacidade de realizar as suas transacções bancárias em qualquer altura e em qualquer lugar através de vários canais digitais. O presente estudo tenta dar uma resposta à questão de como a banca online irá afectar a rede de sucursais alemã no futuro. Com este intuito, foi combinada uma avaliação dos dados históricos sobre o número de sucursais com uma análise de tendências baseada em vários inquéritos e estudos. Para fornecer uma previsão fiável do desenvolvimento futuro da rede de sucursais, foi desenvolvido um modelo de mercado com o apoio de especialistas. Os resultados mostram que se pode esperar uma redução para metade da rede de sucursais até 2030. Uma análise de cenários subsequente mostrou que o modelo de negócio das próprias sucursais também irá mudar. Estima-se que os centros de aconselhamento e os pequenos locais chamados de ‘estilo de vida’ substituam o modelo de negócios tradicional a longo prazo. | pt_PT |
