Este artigo comporta o conteúdo essencial da tese de licenciatura em Teologia do autor. Analisa a construção do mito do Quinto Império na obra profética do Padre António Vieira, enquanto projecto de regeneração da humanidade e como proposta de concretização, agora numa escala universal,
do velho mito do império cristão. Apresenta também as principais linhas ideológicas que estruturam a utopia vieiriana, bem como identifica e caracteriza as correntes em que o sonho do Quinto Império se filia e de que recebe influência.
This article is the essential contents of the author’s graduation thesis in Theology. It analyses the construction of the Fifth Empire’s myth in the profetic work of Jesuit Antonio Vieira, as a project of regeneration of humankind and as a concrete proposal, new in a universal scale, of the old myth of the christian empire. It presents also the main ideological lines which structure the vieirian utopia as well as identifies and presents the tendencies in which the Fifth Empire’s dream is part of and receives influence.
